A great initial challenge would be to duplicate a public facing twitter like API that gets public Facebook data.
Is this possible given the current Facebook architecture?
Many twitter apps would natively work with Facebook as well. A key difference being authorization of a Facebook account instead of a twitter account (as well as comments, etc).

Mark, with this gateway someone could theoretically create something like that, but that's a bit too specific for what this gateway would do itself I think. As I mentioned earlier one of the purposes of this would be to create a gateway that takes data in open formats like RSS/Atom/ActivityStrea.ms (which Facebook supports), and output it in a Twitter API-like format. Theoretically, I guess if you put this gateway on a server somewhere and set it to point to the appropriate activitystrea.ms of the Facebook users you're tracking it ought to work with Facebook.
