returning references with subtrees

A long outstanding OpenTree issue has been the need to return a reference list along with any subtree extracted from the synthetic tree [1]. This applies to API calls, and also to the 'download subtree' link in the tree browser. This would allow users to easily cite the publications containing input trees that support any particular subtree.

We are trying to decide how to implement the reference list, given that the database containing the synthetic tree does not contain citation information about the input trees.

For users of the API, how much of a barrier would it be to simply return a list of internal identifiers for the supporting studies, and then require a second API call to get the citation list for the list of identifiers?
