If I do a File > New Level, it creates a new level strip AND a new column in the XSheet.   But how do I delete the level I just created?
Example:

1.    File > New Level
2.    In the dialog box create a Vector Level with the name "foo"
3.    Then, select the column just created in the Xsheet, right click, Delete.   The column goes away and the level strip says "No Current Level"

... but the level hasn't gone away:     If I do steps 1 and 2 again it complains that "The level name specified is already used: Please choose a different level name"

So where is that already-used level and how do I delete it?

At first I thought I found the answer when I noticed that I could see "foo" in the Scene Cast, and there was a right-click "Remove Level" for it.   So I removed it from there but when I tried to do steps 1 and 2 above, I got the same error.

Thanks in advance!

The warning "The level name specified is already used: Please choose a different level name" appears in either case of the following:
  • The level name "foo" is already registered in the Scene Cast of the current scene
  • The level file (like "+drawings/foo.pli") already exists in the file system
If you got the warning after removing the level from the Scene Cast, you probably hit the latter case.
You need to remove the old level via File Browser, or create the level in different location or with different name.

Yes, it's gone from the Scene Cast but you are right - the foo.pli file was still in the drawings folder.    Deleting foo.pli fixed the error.  Thank you.

But this sounds like a bug.   Deleting it from the Scene Cast should delete the file.  I'm a geek so I can dig around in the file system if I need to but I don't think it's reasonable to expect ordinary users and artists to do stuff like that.    If they created it from inside the program they should be able to delete it from inside the program.

To completely delete a level takes 3 steps:

1. Delete level from Xsheet/timeline (this removes the level from the exposed animation but it remains available for the scene)

2. In the Browser room, in the bottom scene cast area, right-click and select “remove unused levels” (this removes the level completely from the scene but it remains available in the project)

3. In the top of the Browser, open the drawing folder (for toonz levels or the extras folder for raster levels and delete the level (this completely deletes the level from the entire project)

Keep in mind if you delete a level in the Browser, but you have not already removed it from the scene it will display as missing with red text in the Xsheet and scene cast.

The reason removing a level from the scene cast does not actually delete a level is that OpenToonz is setup to use a single level in multiple scenes. It would be nice to have an additional delete command to completely delete a level from the scene and project directly from the Xsheet without any additional steps.
