Hi folks,

I recently installed OTz 1.2.0.1 (the Morevna edition) on my Linux laptop, and the paint brush tool doesn't seem to work at all. I was following one of Candy Cane Koneko's tutorials from less than 2 months ago ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXn5A0UVVOs  ), and she included a demo of the paint brush tool. I'd been following along pretty well until then. But when I tried to use the tool, OTz complained that the tool wouldn't work in a raster level. So I tried it in a vector level, and OTz complained it wouldn't work in a vector level either. Meanwhile, in the tutorial it worked just fine. Is this something that broke between 1.1.2 (the version used in the tutorial) and 1.2.0.1? Or am I just probably using it wrong?

Be well,
Zack

That’s actually the expected behavior. The paint brush tool only works on Toonz raster levels (green colored).

What Jane Eyre said.

In the video tutorial you reference Candy Cane Kaneko first creates a vector level... then says she is creating a raster level but is in fact creating a Toonz raster level.
So it might not have been too clear that she wasn't using a (generic) raster level.

If you are wanting to use MyPaint brushes you'll want to use generic raster levels but for the standard paintbrush create a Toonz raster level.

Come to think of it... someone needs to tell me why I would want to use the Paint Brush as opposed to the Brush Tool in the first place for drawing as it seems to be more for coloring in lines and areas.
More to explore! ;)  I do know that use of the Paint Brush is very useful for cel shading where we paint behind the lines of a drawing (but in many cases I like to put that color on a separate level).

Thanks folks. I appreciate the explanation. I'm just getting started, and it's sort of complicated trying to fit all the features together.

Yes, there is a lot to learn and it can be a little complicated but that's a good thing.
If it were too easy we'd master it immediately and then say, "Um... is that all?"  ;)

I'm still a little in shock that we have this software available to us
I've been looking for this kind of software solution since way back in the DOS days and... now it's here.
And perhaps best of all when recommending it to others I don't have to feel like I'm trying to spend their money.
I can just say... go get it and let's master the art of animation together.
There is a learning curve but little by little, step by step, feature by feature, frame by frame is how we all can get there.
And ultimately, if this doesn't sound too sappy... it's really not about the software... but about the stories we want to tell... and the friends we meet along the way.
But that doesn't mean the software isn't imporant.  It is!
OpenToonz is uniquely qualified to... dare I say... change everything.
