The easiest way to add audio is to drag/drop it into an Xsheet via the internal browser.
Go to the Browser tab
Navigate to the audio file
Drag/Drop the file into the Xsheet.

As for playing the audio along with the images/frames... I've only figured out how to listen to the audio while scrubbing through the timeline.
For that you want to Right Click and select GUI Show/HIde and select Console.
At the base of the Console viewer there will be a scrub bar which you can drag left/right while listening to the audio.

I figure there is a way to have the sound audible after the Play button is pressed but that doesn't work so I'm missing that piece of the puzzle.

There are two ways then I've found to draw while 'playing'' the sound.
The first is to scrub left/right as outlined above and then mouse click into the frame column and draw.
The second is to use the audio's waveform to see where the sounds play in the audio column.

Playing back with sound is essential and I'm sure the capability must be there.
At a guess I'd say it's some obscure thing such as in Adobe After Effects, Blackmagic Fusion etc. where the obvious is not so obvious.

Can't give you an actual answer except for adding it into a column but I don't think this will work.
Make your project and Render it to an .avi data or anything else, it's up to you and add the Audio in a Program like Windows Movie Maker or something similar :)

Ah, posted a moment too soon.

There is a music icon just off screen that needs to be toggled on for audio to play.
Scrolling the toolbar menu over allows access to it.
Once that music icon is toggled on then audio will play along with the image/frames.

I'll try to post a video walkthrough of the setup/process.

And I should have mentioned that the realtime playback of sound appears to be only available in Preview mode (and I assume Render Mode).
The Music icon won't show up unless in Preview Mode.

Video link coming up as soon as I can get something put together.

Yet another useful way to scrub through audio is shown in this video by Simon:

This was helpful, however, as soon as i start scrubbing, i hear a second of the audio play, and then the program crashes. I don't understand why it's doing that.

TOonz supports TWO formats:
  1. non-compressed WAV (Microsoft) signed files at 8 and 16bit integer PCM
  2. non-compressed AIFF (Apple) signed files at 8 and 16bit.

I have tested this, and WAV files saved as 32-bit float PCM load up as a single frame in TOonz. Not only that, but I noticed that TOonz WILL crash when you attempt to import 32-bit WAV files - after importing a 32bit WAV file, TOonz becomes confused, and no longer plays sounds when scrubbing the Xsheet. When I tried to drag a 16bit column past a 32bit single frame WAV column, TOonz crashes without exception.

In short, if you notice that your WAV files are loading up as a single frame in the Xsheet, it means it is a 32bit WAV file. Quite TOonz, and convert your 32bit WAV file to a 16bit version before proceeding.

To convert your 32bit WAV files to 16bit, any sound editor will suffice.

Here are the steps with Audacity:

1) download Audacity at http://www.audacityteam.org/ Either the full installation, or the zipped version which works straight out of its folder.

2) Start Audacity, and load up the offending WAV file.

3) Choose FILE-->EXPORT AUDIO

4) in the SAVE AS TYPE dropdown, select either WAV (Microsoft) signed 16-bit PCM or AIFF(Apple) signed 16-bit PCM.

5) save the file in your TOonz project. I have an audio subfolder where I put these things.

Done! You may have to switch the file browser to a different folder and switch back to update its contents.

Audio tracks in TOonz can be cut, pasted, dragged, trimmed, parts copied, and so on, and so forth. Scrubbing the Xsheet plays the sounds (in Windows you can also drag on the right of a audio column). Click on the column header and various options become available - for example, a volume slider. You may also suppress the audio ouput of a specific column for output and/or export.

16bit wav, aiff, and mp3 files should all be compatible with OT. If you need to convert your audio file to a different format, Audacity is a free program that works well. Import your audio into Audacity (File -> Import -> Audio) and then export to the format you want (File -> Save Other -> Export as ...).
