In Retas Paintman during the coloring process the user can use color absorption to easily use markup lines for shading and highlights. This feature is replicatable in Opentoonz.
Image

To achieve this effect in Opentoonz, the user must first create markup lines using a separate palette color. Draw the lines using pen tool and selecting the appropriate color.

Then, going to the style editor, autopaint lines must selected ONLY for the colors that are the markup lines.

When using the fill tool and after making some colors, click in the area you want to apply the color and the lines will be absorbed.

Things to note:
* The lines will be absorbed on the first color that is filled. If you want to avoid color jittering, make sure to fill in the shadows/highlights first before setting the base color. If you set the base color first, then the lines will be absorbed as part of the base color. Unlike RETAS, Opentoonz does not appear to distinguish between the different colors of markup lines. All lines are treated equal.

* Performed on Toonz Raster level, may work on vector

ooh!!! looks very useful. thanks! this would save a bit of time so don't have to keep switching palettes until actual coloring

Nice, this also works with both onion skin and frame range option in the fill bucket! Coloring in this program is magic!

This coloring style was explained in much detail over at the TVPaint forum by users ten_zero and Jet who I think are Japanese animators explaining it to the developers.

(is that where you got the images for this post? XD)

If you're new to this style give it a read, it's really interesting, not to mention TVPaint just implemented it too which is neat, and by the looks of it it's more like Retas where you have more granular control. I think OpenToonz needs to move towards doing it the same way.

TVPaint might be expensive but wow, that thread was made in July 2015, didn't take them very long at all to build it!

Thanks for pointing to the TVPaint forum. It's a really great crowd over there.

Great, it works just like in Retas. And I do enjoy the fact that the property is per style, I find it more convenient than having to define the colors on an specific menu.
Very happy with this.
Thanks!

This is quickly becoming one of my favorite features of the OpenToonz platform. My only question is this: why does it only work with Raster? I tried for almost an hour to get it to work on my vector animation today before seeing that it only works with raster. It seems like an odd thing as vector should be even easier to implement I'd think. Anyone have any insight on that? Maybe the community can make it happen ^_^. I'm pretty sure RETAS works with vector and raster.

If using this technique with a vector level. An alternative would be to use a color style for the color guides and when the fill is complete adjust the color style matte "M" to 0. This removes the autopaint lines and leaves you with the same results as using the raster level.
