Whenever I try to import a video , it says "can't open file"

This is how i do it: I just drag the video file into the layers, as soon as the little + symbol appears i let go.
It asks me if i want to import or load. I tried both. NOTHING works.

It could be several things.
If you don't have FFMPEG downloaded and referenced in your Preferences you'll probably want to do that.

Knowing what kind of video you are trying to import will help too.

AVI?
MP4?
Something else?

AVI format will almost always import (even without FFMPEG).

Hi,

I'm having the same problem. I have the path to ffmpeg configured in my preferences, but when I go to the file browser, I can't even see the .avi files in the directory. If I use the OS file browser to drag-n-drop the avi file into OpenToonz, it simply fails. OpenToonz doesn't recognize that anything's been done at all.

If I split the AVI file into separate jpg or png files, I can see those in the OpenToonz browser. But I can't see the avi file itself.

Be well,
Zack

Perhaps AVI is problematic on a Mac?

As for actually seeing the file... there could be a number of reasons.
I would eliminate the following first:

Make sure filename is actually .AVI and not something else OT Browser won't recognize on it's look up list.
A workaround to this is often to change what the browser is looking for to *.* or 'all files'.

Somewhat less likely would be OT's setting to monitor and update file listings for the browser.
At one point I turned that off thinking I could save some computer processing but not having the file listing refresh was frustrating because files I knew were there were not being updated.
So, double check that setting.

Back to the original question, we definitely need to know more about the type of video you are working with.  It's hard to troubleshoot without that information short of saying, "convert the video to a format OT will recognize and try again."

In my case the file has a ".avi" extension (I tried ".AVI" with the same result), and is a RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 1088 x 1504, >30 fps, video: FFMpeg MPEG-4

I can’t export to .avi on a mac even with Ffmpeg enabled, so I’m assuming that importing isn’t possible either. The only video format I can use is .mp4 (though QuickTime’s .mov files can be imported if renamed as .mp4 files).

I solved the issue. So AVI and MP4 wasn't working at all. So I just changed the ending of an .mp4 to .mov and then added it.
Thats the only format i can import.
