Hi Leroy,
We are missing some information here.

I must assume:
Windows 10*
Latest release of OpenToonz (1.2)*
16 GB*

If not that please advise of any differences.

I must also assume that you have heard sound play from inside OpenToonz.
In other words, we are troubleshooting Preview and Rendering but not basic use of audio files in timeline/xsheet.

One reason Preview or Render wouldn't play a sound would be that the sound icon is turned off in the viewer.
That should be on by default.
The icon can be hidden slightly to the right (at the bottom of the viewer) so you may have to scroll the menu over to check).

Another reason would be that you have rendered out to a format that does not support audio.  For instance, if you render to a sequence of PNG files... PNG doesn't store any audio.
The primary formats used would likely be MP4 and AVI.  Those should contain sound.

I'm sure this is something simple but we have to discover what that is.

*I have a long term plan to set up a Linux and Mac for use with OpenToonz but that hasn't happened yet.

I'm using an mac. The sound will play on the time line and x-sheet and the animation is going correct. But when I go to file and go to preview or render the sound will not play. I see the sound icon at the bottom of the regular viewer and that works but when i go to file and click preview there is no sound icon and I do not here anything.
Thanks for replying.

Is the preview button on the sound column turned on? If that's turned off it won't render or preview.

Sorry, had to ask the obvious. :)

What type of sound file is it?

You said the sound plays during normal playback while animating. Does it still play when you click the preview button on the viewer (upper right) while animating?

Maybe post a video of what's happening, showing when its working and when its not?

Sorry, not sure what else I can suggest trying.

Perhaps this is a Mac thing?
When I go to File > Preview (shortcut key Ctrl +R) there is a little music icon down at the bottom.
You say that yours doesn't have that so... that'd be a problem.
Again, make sure you scroll the menu over to the right or that icon will be hidden.
I did have to scroll my menu over and turn it on (by pressing the music icon down) because it was set to off.
So double check to see if it's just off and hiding.

On my Mac in the preview window (cmd-r), the audio toggle is missing (definitely not hiding) & sound does not play. Preview directly in the viewer does not have an issue.

I can render successfully with audio in OT 1.2 with both 10.11.6 and 10.12.3.

@Jane Eyre you should submit that as a bug report to the github site.
If I see the bug report listed I'll try to add a reference to it here in this topic.
If it is a know issue with a report already filed that'd be good to know.

@Leroy Lewis  If you can edit your title/subject to read 'Bug:  Missing Audio in Preview' that will help.

In the interim until fixed, as a workaround you should be able to assign cmd-r to the standard viewer window where the audio file will play.

With OS X and FFmpeg setup, the only video formats available are webm and mp4. I’m not sure how well webm actually works - I’m not sure it’s possible to play it on my Mac without additional software or plugins. It’s kinda ironic to be able to render to a format my computer doesn’t use and at the same time can’t use or render .mov which is still one of the most common video formats in OS X. Anyways, as long as the FFmpeg timeout is long enough, .mp4 usually renders without issue.

What format are you rendering? I’m just curious, it may not be related, but can you export your soundtrack successfully?
