Are you using multiple monitors? Someone on GitHub has already detected that as an issue for this software crashing at startup. Other then that all I can say is look through the GitHub issue forum for OpenToonz and see if you can locate your issue there and see if it's being fixed.

I only have one monitor. I also have checked for lvcod64.dll and it seems like i don't even have it on my pc. Tried to reinstall the software in japanese but it still crashes at the boot up.
It isn't even a shortcut problem.

I'm going through the same damn thing. Only got one monitor, did the shortcut thing to no avail, and the lvcod64.dll does nothing. This has got to be some kind of error on their part.

I do have the same problem. I am using Windows 8 64-Bit, and I am using my Main monitor and I have 8.00 GB of Memory Ram.

I really like to Animate things. :(

Same here! Won't work at all.  I guess they should call it "Closed Toonz".  Sad really. It's a good program.  Hopefully someone will have figured this out and put out an update soon.

Try deleting lvcod64.dll
I'm running 3 monitors and having no issues, software been running for good hour now and no crash either.

I think I may have found a soloution. Turn your 2nd monitor off, open OpenToonz, once it opens turn your monitor back on, voila! This worked for me.

Ohhh... THANK YOU @Webkinz 101... you just nailed it.

I am working with 3 monitors and after switching them off (inside Nvidia Control Panel) OpenToonz opened normally, them switched them on again and continuing playing with it

So, THE ISSUE HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE WAY THE PC IS HANDLING THE VIDEO CARD

Hi all - I had the exact same problem, figured it might be a permissions error. You know the "OpenToonz 1.0 stuff" folded that gets created?

I had to change the file permissions on that folder so everyone has full access (took a couple of goes, I got an error first time about the permissions), and then restarted OpenToonz and VIOLA! A small violin. But also VOILA! It only bloody works!

Got to go, it actually bloody works and I need to have a go.

Ok, so here's another possible solution that worked for me.  I've been getting this same crash off and on all day after multiple re-installs.  I noticed I could reproduce it by saving a project and NOT a level.  This broke my palettes and styles, causing the crash when trying to start the main window.  So, if you go into C:>OpenToonz 1.0 stuff>profiles>layouts and delete the directory 'OpenToonz.YOURNAME, it should set all your preferences back to default, and the crash might go away.  I am going to keep a copy of this directory around once I get everything set up to my liking, and then copy it back over if I keep getting a crash.  Good luck!

COPY&PASTE

Here a possible solution: since everybody is telling to delete certain .dll file, I was put aside since I couldn't find any of those .dll files on my PC (Win8.1x64bits DualCore 8GB)

So I realized that IF those crashes were done by the same issue, them we have to find something that everyone of us has in their own computers (Mac, PC... )
Today I managed to completely solve this issue by UPDATING my graphic card drivers (they were a month old or so). And everyone has a graphic card that might need to be updated.

.... now I do not need to disable my extra monitors to "solve" this issue

So, go and update your graphic card drivers to see if it works for you

I think the problem happens due to the way that the software is linked to video codec files somehow, like logitech , Techsmith ,etc..

The idea is to try to find the file stopping your software from working , back it up and then delete it.

    Try this :

When this message window appears " OpenToonz Application has stopped working" do the following :

  1.  On the same window : click " View problem details"
  2.  Look for " Fault module name" and copy the file name ( for me it was tsccvid64.dll, i googled it and found it belongs to Techsmith)
  3.  Now search your computer for that file
  4.  Copy the file and store it somewhere
  5.  Delete the file

Now i suppose the program will work properly..

It is working for me on my win8.1x64bits...
You have it wrong: OpenToonz is for 64bits machines

(copy&paste from their site:

The requirements for using OpenToonz comfortably are as follows:

Windows

  • Microsoft Windows 7 SP1/8.1/10 (64bit required)
  • Intel Core i series processor
  • 4GB or more RAM
  • 500 MB or more available storage space
  • 1280 x 1024 or higher monitor resolution

thanks for you answers.
I did how Abdulaziz said. Apparently the file i have to delete is "MSVCR120.dll". i completely removed it from my pc, and saved a copy on a usb key.
The program still crashes at splash screen.

Mscvr120.dll is a file required for programs written in visual studio. Perhaps install the latest version of this file and not delete it.

UPDATE: the OpenToonz crash on startup problem for me was due to "tsccvid64.dll" - it's for Camtasia which I use to record the screen while I work.

So, if you have Camtasia on your computer and can't get OpenToonz to work, try deleting "tsccvid64.dll" from your computer (or move it to the desktop like I did)

Hi Nicola,

What do you mean by the program crashes again?   do you mean the same message window( " OpenToonz Application has stopped working" ) popup again?
if so, try to repeat the same steps i mentioned to find the other faulty file and delete it.

Ok so. I actually got it wrong.
I managed to run the program in my home pc that is a windows 7 64 bit.  It's a normal pc, not a powerful one, that's why i thought it was a 32 bit system.

Windows 7 64 bit
CPU: intel pentium g2130
AMD Radeon HD 5450
RAM: 4 GB

But my working pc, that is much more powerful, won't load the program.

Windows 7 64 bit
RAM: 8 GB
CPU: AMD fx - 6300 six core
AMD Radeon R7 200 series

Just wanted to let you know. maybe it's helpful.

How I fixed it on my computer.

1. Download Microsoft visual studio.
2. open toonz, it will crash and you will be prompted to debug
3. debug- a pop up will show what is preventing toonz to run. Mine was CFHD.dll (a Sony Vega video codex)
4. google the extension to make sure you don't ruin something you need, and if its not important delete it.
5. enjoy toonz.

Dunno if this thread is still alive, but try deleting the files in the "temp" folder of the cache folder? Worked like magic for me, especially since I couldn't find the .dll file with the 1.0.3 version.
