FYI from my Blog:

Translation quotes has left a new comment on the post "Welocalize and IBM Partner on Open-Source Translat...":

I welcome the initiative and pledge to support it in any way I can. I agree with Bill Sullivan's quote that the ultimate producers in the supply chain - the translators - need and want a free TM tool. At least a baseline tool. The challenge for an initiative like this is adoption. I recommend that the steering committee set up a big booth at the ATA Conference in Denver and give away OpenTM2 CDs and do live demos of the product (à la SDL), so that attendees are motivated to work with it.

Hi
Will it be recorded and available for later viewing for those of us who
cannot make it on Wed?
In that case, do we need to register anyway like if we were attending in
order to be able to view it later?

Jordi,

It will be recorded. GoToMeeting will make it available via their site
(registration separate from the Webinar is required), but I will also
make it available through the OpenTM2 site so that you don't need to
register to view it.

I faced rather severe technical problems and was not able to make the
recording (I barely was able to host the session on that day and made it
in with less than 90 seconds to spare). So even though we had planned to
make one and had announced we would, it didn't happen.

Free is only one of the minimal criteria and is insufficient by itself. The tool has to be more productive than their current environment because there is a cost to learning new software and a risk to installing new software.

Regarding adoption:

Giving out CD’s will at least give them something in hand as a reminder, but a very low percentage will actually get inserted into a drive without some strong motivation.

After all, the download is also free.

If the conference provides its presentations on a CD, it might be good to include OpenTM2 on that CD.

Maybe an alternative is to have an incentive to translate something interesting (perhaps charitable) using the tool.

Perhaps a small monetary donation to a charity for every translation using OpenTM2 of a web page belonging to that charity.

The translator would register and be sent a page, which they would need to translate using OpenTM2 and submit back by some deadline.

The best translations would also be donated to the charity’s site.

The translator should also be asked to submit a review of the tool with the translation.

This would be good PR and get users to try OpenTM2.

Arle, is your response about technical problems referring to the
"first webinar"?
Or is it referring to last Wednesday's webinar?

Arle,

I am pretty sure that Mac users could join the first seminar. Why is it that the second one can only be viewed on "Windows 2000 or higher" ?

From a standard body like LISA that sounds like a bad joke...

Hi Jean-Cristophe,

There was not an issue with attending the seminar for anyone, Mac or PC.

The problem is that the recording format uses a proprietary Windows codec. I agree about using standards, but unfortunately we have no control over Citrix's decision to use a proprietary codec. After evaluating all of the solutions available at the time, however, we found that GoToMeeting was the only one that was reliable enough to work for us. We tried WebEx and found it totally unreliable and at least when we investigated, the lack of integrated audio rendered it unusable for us (i.e., everyone had to call into a dedicated number, but they gave us only a UK number, or everyone had to call in via a headset, but you couldn’t mix both). Any open-source alternatives we found lacked vital features (like integrated audio), while some other proprietary systems were too expensive for us as a non-profit standards association.

This is a long way of saying that I agree with you that proprietary codex nature of the the recording bit is bad, but it was the lesser of all the evils available to us.

I have had some success in converting these files into something readable cross platform using a somewhat convoluted process and will try to fix this one that way.

Arle,

What are the requirements for such webinars ?

Please do !

Also, why not simply video tutorials ?
