una pregunta el koctave lo instalaste desde fuentes o hay paquete para tu distro (ubuntu supongo) pues en debian no lo encuentro y si asi fue te fijaste que cumpla todas las dependencias derrepente te falta alguna

Bueno ahora si me dejaste en el vacio, yo lo primero que revisaria seria el estado de instalacion del octave supongo que es el paquete principal que el koctave usa para fucionar "sudo aptitude search octave" si es que sale una "i" adelante esta instalado pero si sale una "p" este no esta instalado con lo cual tu problema se reduce a instalar el octave y ver que pasa, si no es esto te recomendaria que bajes las fuentes del koctave y las compiles eso debe de fucionar mejor que instalar un paquete recuerda que ubuntu saca paquetes no muy probados y muchas veces con errores (p ejm el mldonkey-server que tiene un error en el script) ojala te ayude esto
