Hello OpenSourceMesh group!

Thanks for your hard work on this...

I'm currently in the early stages of planning two mesh networks. Both have roughly the same needs; a collection of end users spread out, all needing access to one internet connection.

I would guess at the number of hops being less than 10 for any node to get to the single gateway, so I think this is a simple use case... am I correct? I'm happy to get involved and help out where I can, I'm interested in all aspects of the mesh, but I'd like to get up and running fairly quickly. Please could someone suggest a good starting point for me?

I'd like to know:
  • What hardware to pick for mesh nodes
  • What hardware to pick as the C&C system
  • Where to start with picking from all the various firmwares/packages etc

Once I've got a couple of nodes and the C&C system hardware, I'll be working to set up a test setup and I will gladly contribute anything I develop. My goal is the same as this group, it should be easy for someone to set up a mesh of this kind and be up and running quickly. I know choice is a good thing, but it doesn't help when first setting out on the adventure!

If it helps in choice of hardware, I'll be aiming to mount node hardware internally with an antenna externally with minimal coax runs. All I need for the end users is an RJ45 socket...

I run a small hardware design and manufacturing company too, one day, I'd love to pull together an open source design for a rugged outdoor mesh network unit - that way, we can all have the features we want! (Perhaps using existing mini PCI-e radios would rapidly get us to this goal and aid massively with the FCC/OFCOM & other licensing things...)

I look forward to hearing from someone!

Thanks,

Ed

Hi Ed,

My name is Antonio. Im the creator of www.nodalis.es. Now Im involved in a new exciting project called Nubelium. Nubelium is a powerfull combination of firmware and cloud controller for fast deployment of WiFi mesh networks. You can create your account at http://dashboard.nubelium.com and see all the features and cool design. If you are interested in hardware, I have lots of foneras I can sell for for a low cost. We have developed also  firmware for new N Engenius WiFi routers (http://firmware.nubelium.com/sysupgrade/enh200/)

Kind regards!

Antonio.
