unexpected 10ma draw

've just upgraded a K40 with arduino and ramps 1.4 using Dan Breaven's wonderful guide, and have just powered it up for the first time, every thing lights up, but when I turn on the laser it draws around 10 mA is this ok? I turned it off quickly as I wasn;t expecting that,just downloading the firmware  so I can test the steppers etc  I've no background in electronics, so if anyone replies non technical language please
