Audio file link picker won't open (v6.8.8) — general file pickers work fine

Since updating to OpenSongApp 6.8.8, I can no longer add a new pad/audio file link to songs on my Android tablet. Tapping "Audio file link" in the Pad dialog does nothing at all — no picker opens, no error, no crash.

What I've confirmed:

• General file pickers in the app work fine (I can attach images, import songs).
• The app's root storage permission is valid and unaffected — I can browse to my Pads folder fine elsewhere in the app.
• Clearing app cache/storage made no difference.
• A full uninstall and clean reinstall, with a freshly selected, non-nested storage folder, made no difference — the audio-file-link picker still doesn't open.
• Existing pad links set before the update still work fine and play correctly.

This started right when I updated to 6.8.8, on the same device where it worked before. Is this a known issue with this version? Is there a workaround, or should I roll back to an earlier version?

Hi Bruce,

I haven't specifically changed any of the code around this part of the app for a while.  It seems to function fine on my device.  Can you check the following for me:

1.  There is another way to select an audio file for the pad - go to Settings > Song actions > Link > Audio file link.  Try this way of adding an audio file.  This method defaults to opening the file picker in your OpenSong/Media folder.  If this opens, you have a workaround, but will mean checking step 2.

2.  The file picker here looks for a folder called 'Pads' in your OpenSong folder (OpenSong/Pads) and tries to open the picker in this folder.  If that folder isn't there or is locked or corrupted, this could cause the picker to refuse to start.  Can you check if this folder is there and if it is (it should be), can you temporarily rename it to something like Pads_old, then restart the app.  It will create a new Pads folder and see it that lets the launcher open.  If this fixes it, you can move any files that are in the Pads_old folder back into the new Pads folder.  If the app doesn't create the new Pads folder, can you manually create it.

I am seeing a bug when you click on Settings > Song actions > Pad > Pad (current song).  This should be opening the popup window with the pad settings for the current song, but it can fail.  I have a fix ready for that.  You can actually also get to this page by long pressing on the Pad page button (if you have that set up) - I'm assuming this isn't the bug you are describing though?

For the next release, I will put in a crash log collector for the file picker action to see if it is silently crashing if steps 1 or 2 don't sort the issue.\

Can you let me know how you get on.  I am planning on pushing an update to the beta channel later today and it would be nice to include any other fixes for this if required

As a follow up, if step 1 doesn't work either, iit will be down to an update or change to your device file provider (likely Google Files app, or similar depending on which device you are running).  If this doesn't correctly expose audio/* as a specific set of file types, it may fail to open correctly and cause the bug you are seeing.  I will put in a workaround for the beta update that should more explicitly set the file type required (e.g. audio/wav rather than using the * wildcard)

If the "Settings > Utilities > Audio Player / Audio Player Popup" file pickers work fine, they are using the specific file type declarations already and that will confirm the issue.

Hi Gareth, 

Sorry for late response. I am successfully using the work arounds you suggested - One thing that may be causint this is that whenever I do an install, I end up with a nested opensong folder., i.e. OpenSong/OpenSong  so my pads folder is not at the root -  I have tried putting an extra Pads folder at the root of OpenSong but that does not seem to work.  What am I missing when I run setup that I am cosistenly addding that subfolder and could that be the issue?

Hi Bruce,

Whatever the storage location you use (OpenSong/ or OpenSong/OpenSong/ or OpenSong/OpenSong/OpenSong/), the app expects all of the required files and folders in the final folder in the sequence - this is the ROOT folder.  When you set the storage, are you selecting the OpenSong/ folder directly, or the folder containing the OpenSong/ folder?  Either way, the app should be sensible and figure it out, but if it is misbehaving, you can try selecting the other option.

Where do you have the OpenSong/ folder saved?  Some newer versions of Android get upset if it is stored directly in the Android root folder, or somewhere like the Downloads folder.  You could try creating an OpenSong folder in the Documents directory and use that.  When you set the storage location, navigate to Documents and use that (it should then detect the OpenSong/ folder inside it).  If you do have nested folders, you should really check (using Android's file manager) manually for each of the OpenSong/Songs/ folders in your nested locations and manually move them to the Document/OpenSong/Songs/ folder.  You might have songs in OpenSong/Songs/ and OpenSong/OpenSong/Songs/ if you have nested folders being created.  The app only gets permission to the app root folder (the last OpenSong/) part, so everything you need (Songs, Sets, Pads, Media, etc. should be in this root folder).

Hopefully I haven't confused you too much!
