I've been using the Opensong app for years.
My Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 with the current Opensong app 5.6.0 received a software update “One UI version: 5.1.1 a few days ago.
Since then Opensong no longer works.
The app starts, all functions are there, but the text view remains empty.
Opensongs and PDFs are not displayed in the program window.
Although the files are present in the folders and can be selected, only:
“This song is not on your device. Has it been deleted?”
Or the field remains empty without an error message even though the song is loaded.
All song menu and song database updates don't help.
I tried all display and app settings. Nothing helps.
Older versions and the current beta version of opensong app also have the same problem.

Regards

Micha

Thanks for letting me know about this.  I've had another user complain about this but with no information other than saying it was unusable.  I know they were using a device that had also updated to One UI 5.1.1 as well.  There is obviously some incompatibility with that OS and something in the app.  There are no developer notes from Samsung on changes required (OneUI 5.1.1. is based on Android 13), so there shouldn't be anything obvious causing this.  Unfortunately my Samsung devices are too old to receive this update (I've got One UI 5.1 on one device, but not 5.1.1).  The app runs fine on all my test devices running stock Android up to Android 14 (mixture of physical and emulated devices).  Unfortunately I can't emulate One UI 5.1.1.

I'm thinking it must be something to do with database access when the app runs.  I wonder if One UI has restricted access to one of the app specific files (where apps can store their temporary files and where the database is stored).  There are two options for where this folder can be and I have noticed on Android 14 a warning that the current folder may not be accessible (but it is).  I've tried changing this and created a test apk file if you are willing to test it?  I will upload it to my downloads page and you can download it from there.  Link below.

If you do get a chance to test it, I'd appreciate any feedback if it fixes the issue for you.

Many thanks,
Gareth

Hello Gareth
I installed and tested beta version 41. Thanks for the link. However, the app reacts the same as beta version 38. Songs can be imported and opened. All features are available. But there is still no text visible in the text field, only the opensong app logo in the background.
I also tested all Android display options. But no change.

Greetings Michael

Hi Michael,

I managed to borrow a friends device that had updated to One UI 5.1.1 and the app worked fine - I was secretly hoping it didn't so that I could troubleshoot.  I also found that Samsung offer an online device test lab for Android developers and with One UI 5.1.1 on that site the app also functioned as expected.
This unfortunately means I am currently unable to offer a fix in the code as it seems to work on the devices I've tried.  Are you still having this issue?

I have seen this advice from a Samsung moderator on a forum where a user started seeing issues on his device after it updated to One UI 5.1.1. I can't test this out and you do so at your own risk:

Hello, Welcome to the Community. We understand the frustration of not being able to use the mobile hotspot.

As this occurred directly after updating the phone, the first thing we recommend is clearing the cache partition and repair apps in the recovery menu.

To get to recovery mode:
- Turn off phone
- Once off, hold down volume up and power buttons simultaneously
- When Samsung logo appears, release power button BUT KEEP HOLDING VOLUME UP until the recovery menu appears
- Use volume buttons to navigate down to clear cache (NOT CLEAR DATA/ FACTORY RESET)
- Use power button to select.
- Run the repair apps option and your device will restart.

Hello Gareth, first of all thanks for your efforts.  Cash cleaning has not brought any changes.  But I found a way to make songs appear in the app.
1. Self-created songs appear immediately.
2. If I select a song (e.g. a PDF) in its own, different folder in the Android file browser and select "open with....opensong app", the song is imported into the App Song folder and then appears correctly.  This is actually the only way to import.  No other way that the app offers than song import works.  “Initiating songs” doesn’t help either.  It only works with a single song and is therefore very complicated.  The whole thing is a bit strange.
Many greetings Micha

When you restart the app, does that single song still show up and work?  Does this work with OpenSong formatted songs as well as PDFs?

Did you check the latest beta versions 40/41?

Hello Gareth,
 I'm using version 6.0.0_beta40 (365).
OpenSong files and PDFs behave the same.
When I import songs in the Opensong app using Song Actions/Add Songs, their lyrics don't appear in the window.  But they are present in the program folder. PDF files there have 0 Kb and Opensong files have significantly less than the original.
If I import the songs by clicking on them and “open with..”, they are still available and readable even after a restart.
 Many greetings Micha

It actually sounds like your library is corrupted.  Do you have a backup you can restore from?  0kb will definitely be empty.
