Hallo,

First, sorry for my bad english. It's not my native language.

Here the question:
If I want to edit a song and go to "Advanced fieds" I come to "MIDI message sent from song" and "MIDI message to activate song".
How can I use this?
I want to select a patch in the Boss GT-100 and in the BeatBuddy (a drum computer) when I choose a song.

With the app "Mobilesheets" it is possible but mobilesheets only can read pdf.

Thanks in advance
Peter

Hi Peter,

Currently this isn't possible, but it is something I am looking in to.  Those fields are there in preparation and also to allow OnSong users to preserve values in imported songs.

Best wishes,
Gareth

Thanks Gareth for your qick answer.
You wrote, that you are looking for this feature. Can you give us a time horizon how long it will last maybe? Is it very complicated to do this?
Best wishes,
Peter

Firstly, I'm going to have to buy a Bluetooth midi device!  I've no idea how long it will take, but I can't test until I have a device to connect to.

What kind of midi connection are you planning?  What is it that you need the app to do?

If I change a song I want to control the both devices (GT-100 and BeatBuddy) with Midi help. They should change the presets fitting to the song. With MobileSheets it is possible, so I take in the meanwhile this app. The tablet is connected with an USB-Midi-Cable to the two other devices.
Thanks

Hi Peter,

Just to let you know that I've been working on this and have it working on my test device.  I've made the decision to use Android's built in midi API, but unfortunately this only works for devices running Marshmallow or higher.   I've done this as trying to add new features for older devices is making progress very slow!  I hope that you are running this version or better?

I've attached some screenshots to show what I've done below.  It works with usb and Bluetooth midi devices.  I bought an OTG cable with a cheap usb to midi adapter and also bought a HiFing Bluetooth midi adapter and these work fine (although the HiFing device only allowed certain types of midi data to be sent from my midi keyboard - it was only £20 after all, but a nice option to go wireless! It did however receive all midi commands from my android device).

Currently I have set the app not to listen to midi information from other devices as this may cause too much of a battery drain.  This obviously means that it can't 'learn' midi commands by listening to devices yet.  Hopefully using the command editor, it should be pretty straightforward though.

The app is able to send the following midi commands: Note on/off, program change, controller change, MSB and LSB.  These change all settings I wanted on my test midi keyboard and old Behringer Bass V-Amp guitar effects.

I've still to tidy up the code a little and add some translations, but I'm hoping to release to the beta channel in the next few days.  All going well, it will arrive in the stable channel about a week later.

I hope you approve?

Gareth

Hi Peter,

I use the BeatBuddy (BB) as well.
I have the Midi Maestro that I use to jump between patched within a song (Maybe like you use your Roland GT-100)
I am starting to get the hang of it and after many hours of programming, changing layouts and practice am really enjoying it now

I use OpenSong to Select the BB Folder, Drum Track and Tempo. I have shared a spreadsheet that makes it easier and will help you with the commands or codes, as described in this post: https://groups.google.com/g/opensongapp/c/qOe6T1ymjuE/m/7qN_n8y2AwAJ

I use a Yamaha MD-BT01 bluetooth adapter in the midi chain and it works really well (If I don't turn off my tablet in between - But I have an older tablet - my wife's works perfectly.

Gareth, If it helps I can test any Beta versions for you.
One "small" request is if you can add both the "C" note and the "Pedal Hi-Hat" (percussion note) when you press the "SEND A TEST NOTE" on the midi connection page. This will help trouble shooting connection issues - I sometime struggle with cables coming loose after traveling or  another BT device interfering etc.  As I am using a drum machine note range the "C" note and perc sound will help regardless of the instrument being used.

Hi Alistair,

Thanks for sharing this.  I've converted your spreadsheet to a Google Sheet (to make it a little more universally available) and tweaked a bit of the coding to include MIDI channel channels - not sure you had implemented that fully.  I hope that's ok?
For the new (upcoming) Material version of the app,  I've included your suggestions of HiHat note test (went for standard hihit) and additionally added a temporary program change from 0 to 1, then back again.  These should help identify a positive test result on more devices.  I've created a new webpage entry for this too (currently unlisted, but available): https://www.opensongapp.com/user-manual/midi/midi-connections
This also embeds a user copyable view only version of your spreadsheet too:  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14_kG2G1SAwDrZ48lL9pPhD0yodFEGLcLtCL-lYbIBAo/edit?usp=sharing

Info about the alpha testing release with links coming today for those who are brave/keen....
