Hello,
I've been using the app very successfully since about 2016, thank you Gareth for your hard work. Not very complex usage, scrolling lyrics linked to home grown backing tracks.
Recently I had to perform outside on a bright day and had difficulty reading the tablet.
Luckily I had anticipated this and brought along paper copies of my set as back-up.
While looking around for a possible solution, I discovered that most e-readers are Android based. Can you advise if these readers will support the app?

A few years ago, to save tablet storage space I put my backing tracks on an internal SD card. This worked for a while but without warning the links became broken, I suspect auto updates may have contributed to this. I eventually gave in and put the BTs in the app Media Folder.
Is this still the case that BTs need to be in the Media Folder or is it now safe to store them on SD?
regards,
William Gibson

Hi William,

I know there was a user (Joel) who was looking at using an Android e-reader and think it worked for him.  All I can say is that if it runs Android and has access to the Google Play Store, there is a good chance it will work, but I can't guarantee it.  Hopefully Joel is still active and using this and can give some feedback.  Anyone else have experience of this?  There was a post on the forum (search e ink).

Backing tracks can be stored anywhere, however, newer versions of Android are more rigorous in granting (and more importantly continuing to grant) permissions to files that the user selects in an app.  When you choose a file, OpenSongApp requests permission to view/access the file and tries to keep a persistent permission.  However, Android can revoke these permissions after a while, but will certainly do this if you uninstall the app, or clear the app cache.  Updating the app, rebooting the device, etc. does not revoke the permission, but an uninstall/reinstall will.
To avoid this, the app asks permission for a single OpenSong folder on first run.  This gives access to every file it contains (even in the Media subfolder) as long as you use the app.  For this reason, storing backing tracks in the OpenSong/Media folder is still the safest option to guarantee the permission isn't lost for all of your files.

Hope this helps,
Gareth

Thanks for the speedy reply.
I'll check out an e-reader from a vendor with a good returns policy, meanwhile keeping my BTs in the Media Folder.

I suspect features like autoscroll might not work well depending on how often the screen refreshes, but if you're willing to have a go, if love to hear how it goes and see some screenshots, etc.

Latest release likely todo with the color scheme

1. In Light mode, editing, cursor is white or light Grey on white background makes it hard to tell where is the editor is.  Dark mode is fine.

2. In edit mode,  I can't select text.  Line,  word, or make a custom selected highlight.

Ahh.   I tripped over the select text.

Instead of press and hold/ long press,  I double tap the word to enter select mode.

Just the color is problematic still

Not sure if this sent this morning, as i dont see it in my sent items, so forgive the duplication if so.

in the Latest release (6.5.6) likely todo with the color scheme

1. In Light theme mode, editing, cursor is white or light Grey on white background makes it hard to tell where the editor is.  Dark mode is fine. (same color on dark)

2. In edit mode,  I can't select text.  Line,  word, or make a custom selected highlight.
Subnote: I found out the change. Instead of press and hold/ long press,  I double tap the word to enter select mode. i can work with that

just the color of the cursor and the select text.  (can t find how to custom that color)

Hi James,

Thanks for the update, and no, I didn't get a duplicate email.

I've changed the color of the cursor bar in the next release to be darker (will match the sub text colour in the menus).
The long press action was an attempt as a potential fix for FireOS devices to force the keyboard to open.  It turns out I fixed it a different way, so I will remove this (returning the previous behaviour, which I also preferred).  The double tap, apparently, was always an option, which I didn't know until yesterday!  That method will remain.
