Hey everybody,

Just a reminder. We don't allow animated GIFs as per the Developer Guidelines.
If your app uses them, please replace them with static PNG's or JPG's urgently!

We have been a bit forgiving about this rule in the past, but very soon we will start taking down applications that don't follow this guideline.

Thank you for your cooperation!

This specific line is missing from the Portuguese docs:

"Never include animated GIF images in updates—any images used in
updates should be static graphics that represent a specific user
action without distractions such as animation."

Ah! Thanks for point this out. The pt_BR docs and the en_US docs are a little out of sync in some points. That's an important one.

MUST NOTs
   ...
   * Never specify an animated GIF image as an application's thumbnail or screenshot—both should be static graphics that represent the application without distractions such as animation.

this is not complete, there is a similar rule regarding activity
images (referred as "updates") in doc.
also static gifs should be allowed.

original post is a bit ambiguous so I wanted to clarify.

Hi Bruno.

It's fair enough to take down the applications that dont follow the guideline or for any other nonconformity.

But please send a warning e-mail before taking down any application, so developers can change it. If the problem remains and the developer takes no action, then remove the application.

I'm asking this because some "legacy" application may be breaking some rule, and the developer is not aware of it.

Thanks.

Julio

Yes, we'll definitely send warnings before taking anything down, don't worry.

And, just to clarify the ambiguity, the idea is that animated GIF's are not allowed anywhere except on the Canvas view. So they can't be used as a screenshot, on the activity stream or anywhere else.

I've removed an animated gif I was using last week, after seeing this thread. I didn't know it wasn't allowed, and I've seen some other apps using, so I've used it too. And I've never received any warning. If I hadn't signed this forum, I would still be using the prohibited gif.

I still see some apps with bad behavior, things really worse than an animated gift outside canvas. I've even reported a false Photoshop some days ago, wich still have a high score in the apps directory. I hope you guys take care of these things. I believe these kind of apps cause the most harm.

Alex.
