I have a web app and I want to be able to get information about users
from my own web page. I don't want the user to have to go to the site
(say Myspace). I just want to programmatically get user data from a
web page. Can I do this?

my guess is that this functionality will be provided by the proposed
REST interface for the People Data API.
can anyone comment on the status of this? is it the case that each
individual social network will provide their own service, based on a
common specification? should we expect to see each network roll out
their own REST service?
