Based on your feedback, we've made a few changes to the OpenSocial
feature priority list. The updated version is available here:

http://opensocial.googlegroups.com/web/opensocialjsprioritylist.html

Updated entries have been marked with icons to show what has changed.
The complete list of changes is:

1.) "More data types" was moved down to a priority 3
2.) Inviting friends to an application was moved up to a
priority 2
3.) Sending messages to other users was moved up to a
priority 2
4.) Templating was split into two entries.

Thanks for your comments! Please continue to provide feedback on the
updated list here.

I think it is of great importance, at public launch, to count on with
a standard friend picker. I can imagine a lot of gadgets asking for
friends selections, including to make use of the 'sending messages to
other users' that has priority 2 now. It will be difficult to us
developers make an equivalent and throw it away months later to use
the standard. Besides, the 'Method to request inviting
friends' (priority 2, too) would need one, and since opensocial will
be on various containers, it is another reason to make a standard api
friends picker in 0.7.

Also, I want to suggest the picker would show pictures of the friends
and a capability of type some characters and get matching friends (the
current orkut's friend picker has not those features), since many
users have hundreds of friends.

also in this thread you were talking about sending the owner and viewer id's by opensocial's make request function itself, to increase security and prevent spoof.. i don't think its mentioned in priorty list, is this idea dropped?

Thanks

Hey Akash,

The request signing you're talking about is already part of the 0.6
spec. The current priority list is for version 0.7 features.

The 0.7 specification supports this functionality. From the release
notes: http://code.google.com/apis/opensocial/docs/releasenotes.html

"Support for viral growth. Two new methods allow your application to
send messages on behalf of a user. You can invite a user's friends to
install your application with the requestShareApp method. You can also
send an application-specific message with the requestSendMessage
method. Both of these methods require the user sending the message to
authorize the request first."

Orkut is expected to start serving a 0.7 implementation this Friday,
but will not initially have these two methods implemented. Per the
spec "The response item will have its error code set to
NOT_IMPLEMENTED" for both calls. Future updates after Friday will
enable this functionality.

Hi Arne,
we are trying to you use the requestShareApp() method but we keep
getting the error " NOT_Implimented" Can you please point us in the
right direction to resolve this issue?

PROBLEM WITH requestShareApp()
-----------------------------------------

This method return "NOT_IMPLIMENTED" error code....
Here is the test code,

function sendShareRequest(){
opensocial.requestShareApp('some_UID', 'testing share app',
function (response){
alert( response.getErrorCode() );
}
)
}

Lalit,

This is the expected behavior for a container that doesn't support the
requestShareApp method. Please see the following section of the
OpenSocial spec for information on how to discover the capabilities/
features that a container supports.

Cheers,
Lane
