Hello Brett,

You must be logged into your OpenData account to download OpenData files. You can access the login page from the very top left of any page except the home page.  The home page has access to the login on top right below the blue banner strip.

Thank you for your interest in our data.  We would appreciate learning about any apps or mash ups you create with it as this information helps us secure funding to keep the data coming.

Hello Dominic,

I'm sorry you're having trouble.  I do believe that the most likely cause of your problem is your browser settings.  If you do not have cookies enabled, then the download process is not able to confirm your login.  You can tell if you are logged in at any time by looking at the very top left of any web page.  Instead of "Log in to MyOpenSecrets" following | Home | Contact Us |, you should see "Logged in as Dominic" with links MyOpenSecrets Hone and your profile.

Thank you for your interest in our data and we hope to hear more about how you've found it helpful!

Best,

Susi

Dear Susi,

Thank you for your help.  Downloading works now.

I have one more question on 'Lobbying data'.
When I look up 'General Motors' for 2013 lobbying expenditure, the website reports the total lobbying expenditure of $3,220,000.
But below that there is an itemized lobbying expenses which lists the lobbying done by lobbyist (total of $470,000).

Does this mean the total lobbying expenditure for GM is (3,220,000 + 470,000)?
And the $3220,000 figure is an amount directly spent by GM's internal lobbying department?

Thank you for clarifying this for me.
Have a nice weekend!

Best,
Dominic

Hi,

I've also joined today, logged in, see my name as logged in in the upper left corner, and yet I still get the same error message when trying to download. The URL also includes what looks like a hashcode when I click on a file link, like so: http://opensecretsdata.org/download.php?f=Lobby.zip&h=65ed343ba1fc1b719531911efe605b8b.

Any reason for this?

Thank you!! I appreciate all you guys do.

Hello Jay,

This one took a while to figure out because with you clearly logged in, it's none of the causes we typically write about.  Instead, you fell into a tiny little trap that only happens around midnight for just a few minutes and of which I was unaware.  In order to both serve these files up securely from the cloud and log the transactions locally, we use a token system.  Every night the tokens change and downloads are only allowed when the tokens from our server and the cloud match.  That's why the link you sent worked yesterday but not today -- it includes an expired token.

You signed up for OpenData and started downloading files right around midnight and evidently hit a period where the tokens were resyncing. So, thank you for adding to my understanding and I'm sorry for any inconvenience.  It does appears as if you were able to grab most all the files that same night, but please let me know if you have any further problems.

Susi

I signed up for MyOpenSecrets at about 10PM (PDT).  I got the same error for at least the next two hours.  Cleared my cookies and stuff but no change.

The next day at 5PM it worked.   So I think one just needs to wait a while.
