Lobbying Data

I wonder if the lobbying data for each industry also includes expenditures through trade associations. How it categorizes each trade association into the correct industry?

Hello,

Throughout OpenSecrets' data, including lobbying, trade associations are included in industry figures. The process of determining the industry is the same as for companies, in that we research their business activities, revenue, and activities before placing them in one of our more than 90 industries. For trade associations we also consider their member companies of course.

But trade associations, such as the chamber of commerce, include many member companies from different industries. In this case, how do you price them in a specific industry?

Ah, usually we think of trade associations as things like the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers Association or American Medical Association -- groups that represent a specific trade.

More general groups like the Chamber, NFIB and other pro-business organizations have their own category called "Buisness Associations."
