The media type is mentioned in the current opensearch specification:

http://www.opensearch.org/Specifications/OpenSearch/1.1#OpenSearch_description_document

I'm mainly curious to know what the next logical steps would be, and
if this draft hit a brick wall of some kind.

It was a very good draft, and I believe the TBD sections were intended for me to complete.  I can take a stab at that now, if Frank Ellermann is willing to pick this up again. 

The only substantive feedback I'd offer on it would be to remove the AddSearchProvider sections, as they do not depend on either the media type or rel="search", and hence probably don't add much to the case for registration.
