Hi OSF team,

is it possible to connect a preprint to an existing OSF project? At the moment, each preprint gets a new project, which is an unnecessary duplication.

Another question: When I delete the project which is associated with a preprint, then the preprint is also removed?

Best,
Felix

Hello Felix,

The ability to mark a file in an existing OSF project as a preprint is currently under development. Here is a list of all current and future features for the preprint service.

When you delete a project associated with a preprint, the preprint itself is deleted and removed.

Best,
David

Hey Felix,

Just wanted to update you - you can now connect a Preprint to an existing OSF project. Start at osf.io/preprints and select the project you want to add your preprint to.

Best,
Sara

That is great!
Now, finally, it's time to say goodbye, SSRN ;-)

This looks good. So, what is the recommended procedure for the existing preprints that are encapsulated into projects? Can projects be added to overarching, higher-level projects? Should the existing preprints be transferred from their own projects into larger projects? How? What is the recommended workflow? In my case, the preferred state is one project with multiple associated papers and other shared materials.

Thank you.

For the project that contains the preprint, the title must be the title of the preprint and the bibliographic contributor list corresponds to the authors of the preprint.  These factors will often guide whether you use the main project or create a subproject for the preprint.

This also means that if you have multiple preprints, then they should be separate projects (or subprojects).  The subproject approach would be effective in the case of multiple papers coming out of a single dataset.  The dataset and materials might be in the parent project, and the code and preprint for individual papers in subprojects.

Having data and code in the project with the preprint has the advantage of it surfacing in the preprint view, such as the linked files below the preprint in this example: https://osf.io/khbvy

Thanks for the suggestions for improvements in the other emails.  You might send future ideas like that directly to sup...@osf.io rather than to the whole mailing list.  Then they are more likely to get processed, and won't fill others mailboxes.

Regards,

Brian

Thank you for the comments, Brian.

I thought it would be useful to send questions and suggestions to the whole list because they are not ready solutions, they are just initial ideas that need to be discussed by the community, improved, and made more sophisticated before they can be recommended for implementation.

On preprints. I still feel confused. If the preprint is to have the same name as the preprint project, what is the point of the functionality that allows you to add a preprint to an existing project? Surely, this existing project will have a different name?

Also, how does one create a subproject? By linking to a child project from the parent project?

Thanks again.

Sometimes existing projects have the same name as the title of the preprint/paper.  Other times, you would want to create a subproject with its own title and contributor list.

When you select "Add a preprint" at http://osf.io/preprints you can choose whether to add a new preprint, or to connect your preprint to an existing project.

If you choose the second, then you can choose whether to use the project you selected or create a subproject (yes, a child component) with its own title and contributors.
