Hi all,

Is there a possibility to create a mailing list for all members of a project via OSF? I somehow couldn't find any on this in the help pages.

My idea is to create one project for the members of a somewhat larger research project in which the separate subprojects have separate components, but everyone can communicate with each other via the main mailing list.

Thanks a lot,
Henrik

Hi Henrik,

This isn't a feature exactly as you state it right now, but there is a commenting system with notifications. You can configure notifications (in the Project Settings tab) to be sent every time someone comments on your project or in a daily digest (by default, all notifications are turned off). Every contributor controls his/her notifications individually, so every member of your group would have to enable the feature to receive the emails. Then, users would add a comment on the project to communicate with the whole team. Would that suit your needs?

If the project is public, the comments will be publicly visible (there is an option to allow only contributors on the project comment, or to allow any OSF user to comment). Would a way to communicate with the team privately be more desirable? I'm interested to hear about other features/aspects of communication with team members that would be helpful to you.

Thanks,
Sara

I love the idea of having an easy way to start a project-based mailing list for all collaborators.  Great suggestion Henrik!

Maybe the use of Google Groups or developing a system for OSF would help?

Hi Sara,

Thanks for your suggestion, but this is not what I was looking for. My idea would be to add another layer of communication that has an even lower barrier than commenting and would also be more private.

This idea arose from a not uncommon situation: I just attended a workshop and one of the results was the idea to plan a special issue. To coordinate this, continue working on some new ideas developed there, and plan a next meeting it would be nice to have on the one hand the possibility to have components were smaller teams work together, but also the possibility to discuss things among all via a mailing list. This latter part is missing.

I think it would probably be best if adding of new members would need to be approved by the group administrator while members can opt out by themselves if they want. I have some experience with GNU mailman so far for mailing list administration and something along those lines would be pretty awesome.

Cheers,
Henrik

Hi Henrik,

Thanks for providing these details. This is a great idea for adding more collaborative functionality to the OSF. We do keep track of user feedback/feature requests to inform future development, so I'll add your request and notes to our tracker. Please don't hesitate to reach out with further suggestions.

Best,
Sara

Today, I had the need for such an email list, too.
Are there any news about this feature?

Best,
Felix

Hi Felix,

Thanks for your email! We're estimating release of that feature in the next month.
