Team, the Code for America event will now take place on March 3rd. You
can RSVP here: http://sdcodeacrossamerica.eventbrite.com/

What we know so far:

1. It will take place at SDSU's Viz Center. Huge thanks to Eric Frost
for donating his awesome location.
2. We will be building TWO apps:
ArtAround, a public art app: https://github.com/artaround
Open Data Catalog, an…open data catalog:
https://github.com/azavea/Open-Data-Catalog

That's basically it. If you're interested in working on either of
those apps, LET ME KNOW if you haven't already.

Also, we still need help with a few things:

1. Food? Who knows how to get free food for these things?
2. Somewhat related to #1: money? If we need money for food, who knows
how to get money for these things?
3. Other logistics. I'm a terrible event planner, so anyone who's been
down this road before and can help, please let me know!

Write me at jed at opensandiego.org

Otherwise, please RSVP and spread the word!

Jed.

How many people do you/we expect? Should we try to get sponsors for
things like food and maybe shirts or the like? Not required, but could
be worthwhile? Having lead events like this before, I can say the
rest of the logistics should be easy at place like SDSU. Of course we
should do some publicizing, but you knew that.

Eric said the viz center holds about 45 comfortably. I don't expect (or even want) this to be a big event since we're trying to just get things stood up. So, no t-shirts for this one.

That said, I'd like to get food. Kevin at CFA has offered to help with that, but I wonder if there's any benefit to trying to get some more local support. Anyone have thoughts on that?

This is as good a time as any to announce that I'd like to do a City Camp in early May if possible. We'll have to start planning for that (including t-shirts), pretty soon.

That would be awesome. I'm hoping for ~40 people. I'd like to give them drinks, snacks, and something like pizza. What kind of sponsorship is available?

What on earth are all 40 people going to do if all we expect to get
done is to stand up those 2 apps ...

We'll have an introductory session with a presentation about OSD/CFA and some people from the city talk a bit about how they can benefit from open data.

Then we can break out semi bar camp style. Some people can set up the apps while others watch and learn. Others will likely meet to discuss getting data into the apps. And I know Chris Radcliff is willing to lead a session on paper prototyping in case we want to tweak the UX of some of the apps.

I'll be out of town but I can help collect the data on San Diego
public art. Let me know if you need/want any data prior to March 3.

Thanks Maren! I'll let you know of we need data in advance of the event, but I think we'll be ok adding it after as well.

Thanks again!

Open San Diegans! This event is a week from tomorrow. If you haven't
already, please RSVP at http://sdcodeacrossamerica.eventbrite.com/

A few things.

1. You don't need to know how to code to participate. We'll be setting
up two already existing apps and discussing how we can make them work
in San Diego and how to improve them in general. Just bring your good
ideas and desire to improve San Diego!
2. We're still looking for someone to take the lead to deploy the
ArtAround App: https://github.com/artaround
3. Please spread the word to anyone you know who might be interested
and share this on any community calendars you might maintain.
4. Please RSVP! ;)

Let me know if you have any questions. I'm hoping to see many of you
next Saturday!

Bring your smart phones & your walking shoes to populate the app. Wear your fitbit to log the miles you walk tagging public art.

Does the city have data to seed?

We're getting the word out there through our channels.  Shaun and I agreed to speak at the LA Media Reform conference this Saturday quite some time ago, so we won't make it, but we'll continue getting the word out.

thanks,

Art
