When to use this group and when the forum on the site?

Let's kick start this group with a "policy" question:

is this ML more like group for the developers/contributors to discuss design and implementation details while the forum on the sites are more for end users that ask help in something that is already available? Something like the *-devs and *-users used in many OSS projects (this is -devs and forum on site is -users)?

So one reason for using Google Groups was to ensure that we controlled the OpenROV namespace here in Google Groups.

There had also been discussions in regards to utilizing a "proper" mailing list for developers. Hopefully this "group" becomes that mailing list.

Yeah, definitely in my experience ML is better for design/development kind of discussions than forums.

@All: I think as well it's important to limit the communication channels.

So far we have:

- OpenROV blog (at www.openrov.com)

- Forum 

- Wiki

- Wiki Forum

- Google Groups

- IRC channels on freenode

I think we should choose either the Wiki Forum or the 'old' Forum. But if we have both, there will be people asking the same questions in both places or, one question was already addressed in one forum, but not the other. That's going to be a pain.

Either we migrate everything from the 'old' Forum to WikiForum, or discard the WikiForum (as the amount of content is pretty small right now).

Hi, welcome :)

I think all the channels have their own purpose... the only "duplication" is indeed the two forums.

I never used a wiki forum, but if we want to migrate from Ning to Wiki, we have to verify the possibility to:

 - see a list of all the latest discussions: it's very helpful especially for people like us that go to the forum to try and address all questions

 - receive a notification to thread one participated in: otherwise people have to go everyday and see if someone answered, and likely miss something

If the major concern is "not owning our own data", then moving the most possible out of Ning is the good solution. But also we have to consider that having a server to maintain, in the long run, it can become a tiring task, especially if the community grows and we start getting  20-30k page views per day. With Ning (or any other hosted server) this is transparent to us.

We were going to lock down the Ning forums and keep them for posterity, while moving completely to the Wiki forum (more control).  The problem was difficulty in exporting content from Ning to wiki forum.  That was my impression.

That was the original idea, but it doesn't seem like anything we'll do in the near future. Would be nice eventually, but it's one of those "cross the bridge when you need to" type issues. 

Meanwhile, I don't think having the wiki forum up is too much of a distraction. Seems to me like communication is working well as is. Especially with this google group up and running.

Also to note is that the wiki is currently being hosted on a dedicated EC2 medium sized instance. If the machine starts to slow down considerably we can move to a larger instance and multiple machines.

I've scaled pretty large websites on EC2 in the past with most of the instances doing 100k+ a day.

That's the one thing I'm really not that concerned about.
