Hi all

We are currently documenting a case for keeping OpenROAD and Ingres, but I want to collate a list of companies who use OpenROAD.

I had a look on the Actian website, where there are a few case studies.

But does anyone know of a published Actian list?

Many thanks.

Hi Jonathan,

You can get some pretty good information by browsing the Actian community forums.  You can pick up company names by reviewing old postings from the OpenROAD Users mail list.  Many of the top 500 companies in the world use OpenROAD and Ingres.  The field has grown in recently with Actian’s recent acquisitions: Versant, Pervasive, ParAccel.   I recommend have a chat chat to with your local Actian representative.

Here are some ramblings in response to a colleagues questions about the technology  – my biased opinion – and hearsay.

.Net vs ???

Our customers rely on many software technologies outside of Microsoft .Net.  Here are some to consider: Antivirus, Firewall, Anti Spam, Content filter, Adobe Acrobat, Shockwave Flash,  Java (from Oracle), Printer Drivers, Citrix, XML, HTML, MD5, MAPI, POP.    Our emails are often handled by a Linux/Unix server running Postfix or Sendmail or similar.  What software is running your smart phone, or your car?    Both are probably derivatives of Unix.  Add to the list other common business software packages such as MYOB, ECI Client and ETax,  and various dedicated banking gateways.  You might be surprised to find out - most of the world’s major ERP solutions are NOT written in .Net.  (JDE, Oracle Financials, SAP, DynamicsAX).   INFOR, top 3 ERP provider in the world, market several ERP packages, one of them a 5 million line OpenROAD application.

Ingres is database of choice for many Australian Government departments.  Electoral commission - In the last election, Ingres tracked 14.5 million enrolled voters across 8000 polling booths.  Queensland land titles and satellite images are tracked using Ingres.  Bureau of Meteorology use Ingres to track millions of data points collected around Australia daily.  Oz Dept of Defence does not talk about their applications, I believe Eden is a big defence supplier.  Ingres was heavily funded by US dept of defence years ago with Ingres C2 level security being a critical feature.

Browser based deployment vs Fat Client.

I enjoyed this article.  http://www.codemag.com/article/050023    Yes OpenROAD can be deployed in a browser – Runtime can be deployed with a tiny footprint of around 20MB, (unlike Java 125MB or Acrobat 200MB or .Net4 350MB).

Corporate technology strategy vs ??

What are the most important aspects of software acquisition?  Ability to maintain / upgrade the package in the future?   Well, if you stick with Microsoft you are guaranteed to undergo frequent technology upgrades.    I suggest the most important aspects are: functionality, data consistency and security, reliability, user interface, customization, open interfaces, documentation, testing, scaling, ongoing support and licensing costs.  Important also, is the flexibility to run on your choice of hardware interfaced to your choice of supporting technologies.

Cost of ownership for Ingres and OpenROAD is very much lower than other technologies. Over a ten year period, my team of programmers have never had to rewrite code to deal with an operating system or database upgrade.  If the company had taken the VB / .Net path, they would have rewritten the application 3 times during the same period.
