Hi folks.

It has a long time I don't post here and I'm a little far from OpenROAD at all.

We have network installations of OpenROAD 4.0 and 4.1 (II_ADMIN), and now we wish upgrade to 5.1 or 6.0, but in a few tries to install then over an NFS, it does not work (Ingres net - ingstart does not start IIGCN and IIGCC processes).

Does anybody have some clues on this?
Is it possible to be done in these OR versions?
Is there a way to do something like this or we have to install onto each OR client machine?

Thanks in advance!

Hello Leandro

The short answer is no. There is not any way to install OpenROAD 5.1 or OpenROAD 6.0 as an NFS Client.

I understand why there is an attraction for some kind of NFS Client support. It makes is relatively easy to install OpenROAD/Ingres on client machines.

There are two main issues: (1) Ingres NFS Client support and (2) OpenROAD NFS Client support.

The Ingres 10.0.0 Client that is packaged with OpenROAD 5.1 and OpenROAD 6.0 (OpenROAD Ingres Net Client) is installed and configured using a Microsoft Software Installation package (MSI). There are a number of things that are configured on the local machine in the registry, user directories and software installation locations.

The same thing is true about the OpenROAD 5.1 (and OpenROAD 6.0) development and runtime installation. It would be better to use a supported method to install the OpenROAD and Ingres runtime on each user machine.

There is an OpenROAD KBDOC that may be of assistance

KB421097: How can OpenROAD 5.1 be installed using a silent technique?

This technique will allow you to install OpenROAD 5.1 and OpenROAD 6.0 on a Windows system using MSIEXEC. This can be used to install OpenROAD and an Ingres Net Client on the target machines. The Ingres and OpenROAD runtimes can be installed in a very simple fashion.

The user 4GL applications could be accessed in an NFS share by setting the II_W4GLAPPS_DIR directory to the NFS location on each machine. This would allow you to update your user applications from a central location.

Please let me know if you need any additional information.

Hello Durwin,

Thank you.
I can't find KB-421097 in Actian's Knowledge Base. May you send me the link to that article?

By the way, we intend migrate OR because a problem occurs when running 4.0/4.1 runtimes on Windows 7. The problem happens when a popup message is called in our application. It raises an Windows error and closes the app. In XP with IE 7 or 8 it happens too, but there is a workaround enabling/disabling "Turn off advanced text services" in XP's Control Panel ... In windows 7 this option does not exist anymore.

Someone faced this problem?
Is there an OR patch or something else to workaround in Windows 7?

I will open an issue on Actian's Service Desk.

TIA.

Hi,

Yes it's not very easy to find.

I logged into the service desk then did an advanced search using the
document number without the 'KB-' bit.

I printed it to a MS XPS format which I've attached.

Thanks Adrian.

I found the article searching by words "openroad silent installation" instead of "KB-421097".

Best regards.

Some KB usage notes:
If you have got a KB id, you can go into ServiceDesk,
select "Document By ID" from the option field in the upper right corner
and enter its ID (without the "KB-" prefix) in the field next to it (hit <RETURN> or the "Go" button).

You will need the "KB-" prefix when entering the ID into the "Query" field of
the Actian Knowledge Base in the web (www.actian.com/kb),
but not all documents from ServiceDesk have been published to the public web (yet).

HTH.

Regards,
Bodo.
