formfeed is lost by report writer

For this work I am working on a windows 7 laptop with the community edition of ingres installed on it. though the database is on a 10.2 Linux server.

I have a multiline field in OpenROAD which maintains a table with attributes which are varchar (250) not null with default
looking at the table via isql - you can see \n where the form feeds are.

I am running a report writer (.rw) which gives a text file (actually a python script) the"\n"s are somehow truncating the field everything after \n is lost for that field.

Prior to introducing the form feeds  the other parts of the attribute were displayed in the output file

Does anyone have any idea what is going on here?

Note - I have removed the 200+ spaces to make this readable

The '\n' is a newline character (0x0A) rather than a formfeed (0x0c).

any idea why it is not being picked up by report writer or indeed why report writer is truncating this string?

is there a way of changing 0x0A to something else - curiously actual  "\n" as characters has the desired effect. (the python script is used to generate an xlsx spreadsheet)

so if I could do something like

 .LETdesc2_lcl = replace(prop_desc2,'0x0A','\n') in the rw script or in Sql


I tried
 .LET   desc2_lcl = replace(prop_desc2,char('0x0A') ,'\n')

but that did not work

Allan 0x0A is not a string, but a hex value (decimal 10) for the newline character,
therefore you cannot use '0x0A' - which is a 4 character string  (containing the characters '0', 'x', '0' and 'A').

You could try a hex literal constant instead:  X'0a'
