If playoutd is not started pretty quickly after v4l2_ingest, it seems
like all it will do is say "off end of available video".

When I do manage to get playoutd and v4l2_ingest synced up, the output
from playoutd looks like this:

"YTOTYTOTYTOTYTOT"...

Is this supposed to happen? How do I get this data into a form that
(e.g.) mplayer can use?

It may say 'off end of available video' if you haven't started the UI... that's normal. Once you start sdl_gui and mark a shot (with the keypad '+' key), it will communicate with the running playoutd and the messages should stop.

I'm guessing the 'YTOT' is your YCbCr 4:2:2 output, so you can go ahead and run '/path/to/playoutd | mplayer -demuxer rawvideo -rawvideo uyvy:w=720:h=480' to see the video. If you're using the 'StdoutOutput' adapter and don't pipe the output from playoutd somewhere, it will indeed fill your terminal with junk.

I tried that, and my mplayer output was a solid green window.
