Hi All,
I want to share my Open Refine project with my colleagues who will take turns doing some work, eventually the project will come back to me. I'm trying to figure out the best way to export the subsequent versions.
The option to export to OR archive (the tar.gz file) seemed a pretty streightforward solution to go with, but I keep having trouble with it. First I got different error messages while trying to import. I updated Java, downloaded the earliest release of OR and changed the browser to Edge (I was using firefox before and it exported to tar.) Now, on Edge it exports to tar.gz and I do not get any error messages while importing, but it seems to take forever to load, what I see is the wheel turning and it never displays the data (even though afterwards, when I go back to the starting screen,  I can see the project I failed to import with the correct number of rows on the list of projects - but it does not open).
Does anybody here knows why am I having this trouble importing from tar.gz file I just created? The original project, although quite big, loads from my disc in 4 sec, so it cannot be the size, can it?
On the console I have only this and nothing more:
09:22:24.557 [   import-project_command] Importing existing project using new ID 2238159138539 (2ms)
09:22:26.056 [                   refine] POST /command/core/load-language (1499ms)
09:22:26.065 [                   refine] GET /command/core/get-preference (9ms)
09:22:26.066 [                   refine] GET /command/core/get-preference (1ms)
09:22:26.071 [                   refine] POST /command/core/load-language (5ms)
09:22:26.075 [                   refine] POST /command/core/load-language (4ms)
09:22:26.079 [                   refine] POST /command/core/load-language (4ms)
09:22:26.085 [                   refine] POST /command/core/load-language (6ms)
09:22:26.120 [                   refine] GET /command/core/get-project-metadata (35ms)

I would be grateful for any hints - thanks!

I tried importing without renaming the project and it worked - maybe there is a bug?

Hi Agnieszka,

Just to check - can you confirm what didn't work was:

* Export project (get tar.gz or tar file)
* Import project from the file including a new name in the option "Re-name project (optional)"
* Import fails - just hangs with a wheel turning at the import stage

Have I got that right?
Could you confirm which version of OpenRefine this was with and on which operating system?

Thanks

Owen

Hi,
yes, thats it. I'm running 3.6.1, Microsoft Edge, Windows 11
My colleague who tried to import the very same file, also on the 3.6.1 version on Edge, got this:
error message.png

Can you tell why this could happen?
Thanks,
Agnieszka

I'm afraid I can't work out why this might happen - I've tested locally (but only have access to Mac not Windows) and don't see the issue with a small test file.

If you are able to it may be worth creating a Github Issue for this as it sounds like it might be something that needs some more technically analysis

Sorry I can't give a better answer

Hi, sorry to interrupt.
But the problem for me is that I can not export the openrefine project archive as a tar.gz file, but only a tar file. How can I get a tar.gz file as I'm a university student, and the requirement of the assignment is to get a tar.gz file output..I'm confused.

Hi

It's usually better to start a new post on the Group when you have a different problem, rather than using an existing thread.
I'd definitely suggest telling your tutor (or whoever you need to submit the assignment to) that the export is coming as a tar file and whether that's OK  - it might be that this is just a change to when they first set the assignment and it's not a problem

You can gzip a tar file after it has been exported from OpenRefine - the tar format and gzip compression are not OpenRefine specific files, but are used widely especially on the Linux/Unix operating systems.

I'm not completely sure if there has been a change in the export, or if it varies depending on your platform - but I also get a tar file (on macOS) when I export the project from OpenRefine

Hi,
the problem might be the browser you're using. With Firefox it would only export to tar, but when I launched OR on Edge it would create a tar.gz file.
Hope this helps,
Agnieszka
