Hello all,

I am brand new to this group and have beginner OpenRefine skills. I'm working on my first attempt at using the reconciliation service with anything other than VIAF-LC (names). I am trying to reconcile a list of terms to LCSH. I added the service from https://freeyourmetadata.org/reconciliation/
Name LCSH
Type Virtuoso
Label properties check only skos:prefLabel

When I hit reconcile, it says "Sorry, we can't suggest any type for your data. Please specify a type yourself below" and I wasn't sure what to enter so I changed the menu button to "Reconcile against no particular type" and unchecked auto-match. No matches were found--each entry only has checkboxes to Create new item.

When I click "Search for match" from a single cell, the search box changes to "Sorry, something went wrong. Please try again later."

For comparison I tried using reconciling using Wikidata, and it filled in types to choose from and functioned as expected (messy, but as expected). I tried re-uploading as a new project, restart, etc. Running v. 5.3.2.

Thanks for any advice!

Best regards,
Rebecca

Hi Rebecca!  Welcome to our OpenRefine community!

That endpoint hasn't been maintained since 2017 as far as I understand from Ruben Verborgh.

There is a thread in our group from about 2 years ago:
https://groups.google.com/g/openrefine/c/vKHOyU1ws7Y/m/ZxWGOEgBAgAJ
That might help you more.

Our User Manual for Reconciling is here:  https://docs.openrefine.org/manual/reconciling
We also have technical / user documentation about the Reconciliation API with additional links within it that you might check out: https://docs.openrefine.org/technical-reference/reconciliation-api

I think in 2022, there are several options available to you that I can quickly think of:
1. reconciling LCSH's against the Wikidata endpoint directly.  For example, you'll quickly find "dark web" or "statesmen" in Wikidata...but unlikely to find complex (compounded) subjects like "Face--Muscles--Abnormalities--Treatment"
2. running your own local reconcile endpoint that has the RDF/XML (SKOS file) or JSON (SKOS/RDF file) https://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects.html  that is loaded and indexed.
4. Trying some of the other public endpoints to get familiar.  We maintain a list here: https://reconciliation-api.github.io/testbench/
5.  ???

So it kind of depends on what you are looking to do really.
There is also a very close knit family of Librarians (and me!) in the LD4 Slack group channel #wikidata  which you can join here:  http://bit.ly/ld4slack  or directly here:  https://ld4.slack.com/archives/CGS1Q2WP9
More info about the LD4 Wikidata Affinity Group calls are here: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_LD4_Wikidata_Affinity_Group
