Hello Community !

As OpenRefine begins a transition of collecting sponsorship and donations, we wanted to give our community complete transparency, even before we begin to setup a non-profit organization.  (We have been running for the last few weeks with a simple bank account to hold the sponsorship funds graciously donated from Google Inc. News Lab)

We seem to have votes to move away completely from BountySource, so I will close that door and either try to refund those donations, or if we can't for some reason, then move them into the bank account.

We have posted the Sponsorship and Financials on our Github Wiki homepage at the bottom.

This grant from the Google News Lab is truly exciting news. Where can we read more about it?

Hi Ettore !

Hmm... the story may or may not be made into a story itself on Google News Lab site.  Up to Google on that. :)  Checkout their site, lots of interesting news projects they have collaborated on.

For us, hmm... I guess we can write up a short summary of it on a Wiki page and make that Sponsorship link point to it ?

For now, we just have notes from our Hangout meetings with Simon@Google, not much other than "Hey Google wants to help OpenRefine in order to help New Organizations with their data more...how can we help out and what resources would you need?"  So we said...hmm....Money? :) and perhaps a bit of guidance from smart Google engineers at times ?  Those 2 things would be nice :)   And then Simon said. "OK !".  That's pretty much the sum of it...then I had to run around town to get a bank account setup because Google wanted to get us quickly working on our goals and milestones and to quickly receive the money from them, and all the while Jacky and Antonin and Owen and myself have been getting 2.8 out the window with new features.

In the background and for the new month or two, Martin and I will be working together with the community to help form the new Non-Profit organization "OpenRefine Foundation" and its governance, etc.  Right now its just a private entity and of course we don't like that and didn't even want to have to set that up, but it was the quickest way to receive the generous donation.

(Note to myself: remember to occasionally send emails to Google...)

Well, I guess Simon Roger really does not need to be introduced to Open Refine. ;)

It's good news. We feel that things are moving on all sides.
