When I launch OpenRefine, I get a blue screen in the browser.  I try to click on Open Project and all the headers jumble up together so that I can't click on anything.  I've tried uninstalling and installing the newest version, 3.3, multiple times, as well as tried it in different browsers.  The command box looks normal.  Has anyone else had this issue before?

Hi DiAndra!

This might be your particular browser you are using.  Which one is it?

If Firefox, can you try SAFE mode? (disabling all extensions temporarily, and enabling each one to see what is causing the issue?)

Chrome doesn't have a safe mode, but you can also just use Incognito or New Private Window (which will usually disable browser add-ons that might be causing an issue)

Let us know,

Hi!

If you have upgraded from a previous version, this could be due to
extensions that are not compatible with 3.3.

What should I do in this case?

You could try to remove these extensions, and restart OpenRefine.

They are stored at different locations depending on your operating system:
* Linux ~/.local/share/OpenRefine
* Windows C:/Documents and Settings//Application Data/OpenRefine OR
C:/Documents and Settings//Local Settings/Application Data/OpenRefine
* Mac OSX ~/Library/Application Support/OpenRefine

When starting Openrefine, a blue screen replaces the area, where existing projects reside. So, the projects are not visible at startup. I can create new projects, but cannot access the old ones from "Open projects". The "Browse workspace directory" works (I can open the workspace directory), albeit after clicking several times, because the button is moved at the top left corner, partially blocked by the project tags. All this happens under: Windows 10, Operefine 3.4.1, Java version 8 (build 1.8.0_271-b09). Any ideas? Thanks!

Hi George,

I think this is due to an OpenRefine extension that you have installed in the AppData folder for OpenRefine, which is also where the workspace is defaulted under and holds your projects folders and files.
So... we don't want to risk losing your projects when deleting the OpenRefine extension to fix things...so let's do these steps in order:

1. Backup the OpenRefine folder under your AppData folder.  (use Zip or whatever archive tool like 7z that you have on Windows and then move this .zip file to a safe location or additionally uploaded to the cloud somewhere)
2. Delete the OpenRefine folder under your AppData folder.
3. Start OpenRefine, which will recreate the folder and workspace folder within it.
4. Report back any good news, then we can take next steps (which will be to selectively move your project folders back into place from your saved .zip backup file)

Great Georgi!

Do you need further help in copying the workspace.json file and the individual project folders from your .zip backup file... or is it that you are all set and can take of this yourself without guidance?

No, it's all set, thank you again. I didn't know it was so easy. Do you have this solution described somewhere?

No, but I'll add something now on our Wiki troubleshooting about "the blue/blank Open Project page and jumbled HTML content"  might be a symptom of an incompatible OpenRefine extension installed.

Please create a ticket to fix the bug as well. An incompatible extension shouldn't require this level of debugging. It should just give the user a simple error message explaining what the problem is.

The ticket Thad created is here if anyone would like to follow it: https://github.com/OpenRefine/OpenRefine/issues/3326

Georgi & DiAndra - Could you let us know which extensions caused your issues, either here or on the new ticket? That would help us reproduce the problems and figure out the best solution to prevent it from biting future users.

Thanks,
Tom
