Hi

Is anyone aware of a reason why my transformation history and starred transformations would disappear?

They were there when I used OR in the morning, when I continued working after lunch they were mysteriously gone. Open Refine remained open the whole time. All my projects are still present.

Am I right in thinking this information is stored in the workspace json file? Is there any reason why the data should unexpectedly be wiped from here?

Version 3.2

Thanks

Graham

Yes,
The history doesn't stay forever.
You can think of it like a session.

If you close that url/openrefine window, you cannot trace back that json file.

Just to be sure, always save your json, before closing your session.

You might check data.txt in the workspace.

Hi Graham,

It looks like you hit a bug that we are currently trying to resolve.
In fact, you could be helpful in resolving it!

I noticed you have 3.2 version of OpenRefine so that's useful to know that the bug exists in that version also.
It's likely that OpenRefine wasn't actually still running.  Its JVM might have been closed by Windows Hibernation, or something like that.
We have seen that if OpenRefine's JVM process is stopped unexpectedly, then this causes some potential corruption in either workspace.json or other files.

Can you share your particular details in the tracking issue we have here:  https://github.com/OpenRefine/OpenRefine/issues/2543
It would also be useful to get a copy of your workspace.json file attached to your comments on that Issue, and any other details you can provide.

Thanks so much for helping us try to fix this bug!
And in the meantime, check all your settings on Windows/Mac/Linux whichever, to ensure that if you have OpenRefine running some long operation, that the JVM won't suddenly stop, so things like Power options, Hibernation, Sleep, etc.

Thanks Thad

I’ll log my issue and any details I have.

In terms of salvaging my workspace history, I have a backup of the file from 2 months ago. Do you know if there will there be any negative impact if I simply replace the current workspace with the 2 month old one? I don’t want to affect my projects, I just want to salvage my previously used and starred expressions. Would it be more advisable to just replace those sections of the json?

Thanks

Graham

Yes, I would try to just replace those sections of the workspace.json  (which currently gets overwritten if the previous shutdown was faulty)
