Hi,

I’m trying out some named entity extraction services in Open Refine using the Refine-NER-Extension. Besides 3 of the baked in services no longer being active, has anyone been able to get the Stanford NLP to work? It runs but then errors out with a “Could not execute HTTP request” message.

Thanks!
Jennifer

I'm afraid I can't remember exactly how the NER Extension works with Stanford NLP - can you point to any documentation and what steps you are doing?

In terms of NER generally I've had some success (and failures!) with online services such as Dandelion, ParallelDots, TextRazor

I've written a tutorial about using Dandelion (as part of a larger OpenRefine tutorial) and you are welcome to have a look at that if you want https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RpOCxaZK9q8hvuU0g2KVhL9n2GiXuF3cxrXV0NzlHgU/edit#heading=h.9x2inoswt832

Hope this is of some help, and if you can give some more information about the Stanford NLP approach I'll see if I can help with that (I have a vague memory of running this some years back, but I can't remember the details and I'm hoping if you give some more information it will jog my memory!)

Hi, if you are using it with Stanford NLP I'm guessing you got it from the fork here: https://github.com/stkenny/Refine-NER-Extension

The released version of the extension from there will try to connect to an instance of the NLP service running on localhost, port 9000. I did add a configuration option for this afterwards but did not create a release with that change.

Running the NLP server is described here: https://stanfordnlp.github.io/CoreNLP/corenlp-server.html

The original version of the extension isn't being maintained as far as I know. The fork was just so I could try it with something I was working on at the time.

Regards,
Stuart.
