Hi,

I recently installed Openrefine and cannot launch it. I found some discussions where people seemed to have similar problems, yet I was unable to find any working solution. When trying to launch using openrefine.exe, browser opens and states "HTTP ERROR 404 Problem accessing /. Reason: Couldn't find the specified resource". When I try to run refine.bat, command prompt just quickly flashes before closing again. I have already set JAVA_HOME to the directory I have installed Java. I also have tried to set it to both Jre and Jdk installations of Java, an to versions 7 and 8 of both of these.

I also tried to run both openrefine.exe and refine.bat using the command prompt as an administrator. When I tried the .exe, it gave me "Error: Could not find or load main class com.google.refine.Refine". Running refine.bat gave "The system cannot find the file refine.ini." and "Error: Could not find or load main class com.google.refine.Refine". Refine.ini file is in the same folder as refine.bat.

I have tried versions 2.5 and 2.6 beta and had the same problem with both of them. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Are you trying to launch it from a network share? I had a similar issue recently and the solution was to either move it to a physical hard drive and run it from there, or to run it from the command line (cmd.exe). The latter only seems to work if you have the network share mapped to an actual drive letter first. It seems that somewhere there's a component that doesn't like UNC network paths.

Hope that helps!

Jez

PS. I wrote a blog post about this recently but haven't got round to publishing it. It has a few more details so I'll try and get it up and you can compare your error messages to what I got.

Sorry to hear that you're having trouble.

One of the things that can cause this is unzipping without restoring the folder structure so that everything is in a single directory.

Any chance you did that?

Hi,

The problem seemed to be launching from the network share. Moving OpenRefine to physical hard drive solved the problem. Thank you a lot for the help!

Best regards,
Jesse

Hi Jesse,

Thanks for the update.  Glad to hear you got things working.  I wasn't aware that we had this restriction.  It's probably something that could be fixed.  Could I ask to you file a bug report in the issue tracker so that we don't forget about it?  https://github.com/OpenRefine/OpenRefine/issues

Thanks,
Tom
