I downloaded Google Refine 2.5 using the "Windows kit - google-refine-2-1-r2136.zip" file.  Clicking the .exe file runs the script and opens the Google Refine opening screen in a browser window.  I then select Create Project, Get data from This Computer, select a CSV file on my computer, click the Next button, and absolutely nothing at all happens.  I have tried this numerous times and have re-downloaded the software, always with the same result.  I cannot see what could be wrong or what else I would need to do.  Perhaps I'm missing some essential step?  I'll greatly appreciate any help.  I'd like to use this software in a metadata course I teach.

Steven,

There were some bugs found and fixed in 2.5 version regarding CSV input.

So step 1 would be to download the BETA 2.6 version and install it and try again.

Here is all of our releases thus far:

You want the openrefine-win-2.6-beta.1.zip for your Windows system.

Also, be aware that you make have some weird chars in that CSV file that are causing an issue, or if the CSV is especially large.  (we fixed a few bugs in that regard)
Make sure to also try unchecking the box "Parse cell text into numbers...."  which might be causing an unnecessary slowdown in your case if the CSV file is large. (you can always do column datatype conversion later in the project grid, so don't worry about conversion at the beginning of importing a file, but set the unicode char set, if you know it's ASCII, or UTF-8, etc)

Let us know how 2.6 works out for you, or if you have any more questions !

Thanks, Thad.

When I run BETA 2.6, I get a browser screen that displays only the OpenRefine logo in the upper left corner and nothing else.

Switching to Chrome worked.  Success at last!  Thanks much for the help.

What browsers were you using before?  Recent versions of Internet Explorer have hopefully improved enough that they should work too.

I'm using Internet Explorer version 11.0.9600...  Come to think of it, ever since the latest automatic update IE has no longer worked for a couple of programs and functions that used to work perfectly well using it.
