Hi everyone,

OpenRefine has been awarded a Diversity & Inclusion grant from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative: OpenRefine for Everyone.

This grant covers my position (currently 10 hrs/wk, after October 20 hrs/wk) and our Outreachy internships. We also have a budget of around 50,000 USD available, which can generically be spent on software development related to the grant's focus: diversifying OpenRefine's community and governance; and eliminating cultural and linguistic biases in OpenRefine.

OpenRefine's advisory committee is currently collecting ideas on how to spend this budget. You can find our current ideas in this Google document - it is open for comments and edits by anyone. We warmly invite your input: comments on existing proposals, and/or additional proposals of your own. Especially if you are familiar with using datasets in non-Western (human) languages and scripts in OpenRefine: we'd really appreciate your ideas and feedback!

Please provide this feedback in this document before Sunday, August 14. The advisory committee will then regroup and discuss the existing proposals further.

Many thanks in advance, and all the best :-)
Sandra

Sorry I missed this first time around. I didn't associate "diversity" in the subject line with localization, which is something I've focused on for over a decade with OpenRefine.

I know the deadline has long since passed, but my general feedback is that I'd like to see much more emphasis on software development over marketing videos, administrative overhead, and other things which don't provide benefit to the community. The actual localization support seems to get very short shrift (and doesn't seem to be backed up with actionable detailed issues).

The money hasn't been spent, and no decisions have been made yet. The 50K needs to be spent before August 31, 2023 (but CZI seems flexible with extensions).

The floor is yours!
