Hello all,

With Florian Giroud and Kush Trivedi, we have been having a monthly
meeting to check up on the status of our new Cypress test suite.

I would be interested in turning this meeting into a more general
gathering about any topic related to improving OpenRefine development,
meant in a broad sense: documentation, packaging or translation issues
would be totally in scope (but it would not be designed for live user
support). It would be open to anyone and we could publish an online
calendar for it, so that we can easily keep track of it.

This would not be intended to be a place where we take crucial
decisions, and no one would be expected to attend systematically: the
aim is just to provide a welcoming space where people can hang out and
meet the real people who stand behind the GitHub usernames.

So far our meeting was on Thursdays at 13:00-14:00 UTC. I would like to
gauge the interest on this list. Would you like to attend and what sort
of times (in UTC) would you be able to make it? What topics would you be
interested in discussing?

Cheers,

Antonin

Hi Antonin,

A regular dev meeting sounds sensible and useful for the long term health of OpenRefine and its ever widening community (now including more and more Wikidataians).

I think some good starter topics to cover over the next meeting are:
  • asking contributors or interested potential contributors what areas, roles, responsibilities they enjoy, want to be involved in, or want to continue (ensuring health of governance specifically for contributors).
  • After that, then the roadmap and aligning perhaps some milestones (or setting them).  Or at least update and refine a roadmap, along with topics that you mentioned.  This could also help to continue to attract funding or at least help with presentable material to funders.
  • trying to triage some issues into milestones/roadmap.  (it's hard to do without consensus, and I really never liked having only 1 person do that... it would be nice to have this done as a group effort and can be done in short spans of time over many meetings)

Personally, I'm open for any time.

Wait, you said " This would not be intended to be a place where we take crucial decisions".

So I guess then my topics suggested would be out of scope?  Where then would decisions of OpenRefine's roadmap be made if not by it's own loving dev community?
Or maybe you can elaborate more on what you mean by "crucial decisions"? Thanks. Or maybe that itself is a good first topic.

I would prefer crucial decisions to be taken asynchronously, on this
mailing list or GitHub, so that nobody is excluded from them by the
choice of time.

The purpose of this call (as I would see it) would be to provide more of
a social space.

I think it would be a good idea. I would come a few time per year.
