First some backstory I have been playing with adding a laser cutter to my 3d printer. To start I took a couple of old DVD burners apart for the laser diode. That is coming slowly but I am also working to build up with my son the openrc Truggy.
While looking to source parts I pulled out my salvage bag and low and behold I had 4x 3mm polished stainless steel rods 81mm long. Turns out they fit the bill nicely and all for no extra money out of my pocket. I need to cut them down but they should give me enough for the 56mm and the 18mm rods. These are from the laser slides in the DVD burners. Although I am sure a standard CD drive would have them as well. I believe I took apart only 2 dvd burners so if you have a few laying around maybe save yourself a few dollars!
