Dear all,

Do you know how I can get basic info of each train, e.g., max speed, from Network Rail data feeder? Many thanks in advance.

Regards

Xiaocheng

Hi Xiaocheng

Network Rail manages access to the railway - it's up to train operators to run actual trains in the paths they've been given.

Schedule data includes some information on the timing load used for times in a path, but it's up to the train operator to put suitable rolling stock on that will meet or exceed this performance, else the train will keep losing time.

Best wishes,

Hi Peter,

Many thanks. Do you know if there are some other data sources to get the rolling stock info, like things on live train time web (https://live.rail-record.co.uk/)?

Best regards

Xiaocheng

Hello

Rail Record crowd-sources the data.  Realtime Trains has 'partnered' with Scotrail to get train formation data but that seems to be a private deal between them.

There are various railway systems which hold allocation data, but they're not open.

EMU/DMU classes can also be partially deduced by the timing load field , for some services it may show timing load 720 (for class 720 aventra), or timing load 700 for a class 700.

This isn't always perfect but seems to be a reasonable deduction, some have letters but there's a useful guide on the wiki.

https://wiki.openraildata.com/index.php/CIF_Codes
I've personally used the timing load conditionally by train operating company as well, so it's a bit more accurate (Southern DMU services used to have same Timing Load as a 158, so i conditionally put 171 instead if SN)

You may also find the Darwin OpenLDBSVWS of interest in looking up train coach formations
