Schedule and Train Number

Hello,

Does anyone know how to match a scheduled train service with the actual physical train/unit number running it? I know Realtime Trains shows this information on their detailed pages, and I’m trying to figure out how to pull that same data or link those two pieces of information together.  

I am not sure if this is possible with the public feeds. If anyone could point me in the right direction Id be very grateful

Yes, it's all in public feeds, you need the timetable to get the scheduled train service, and then the Passenger Train Allocation feed (from RDM), then you can tie them together using the UID.

Passenger trains only, I'm afraid.

Hi Phil,

This is a superbly timed email, as I was about to ask the same question. I can see on CWH website a "Schedule ID number" search, from todays FO C21591 1R68 Norwich to Sheffield, gets this service number 41243099. I have the CIF downloaded, the unitallocation feed, and the associations, but cannot see a correlation. Would you please be able to elaborate further in your explanation above, I have obviously missed something.

There are two messages for that service from earlier today from a quick grep of my log files, generated at 01:27:52 and 04:32:32. You want to do the matching on the Core field inside TrainOperationalIdentification, as the UID will be held in that – for this train it is <Core>1R68C2159109</Core> (train headcode, train UID and I can’t remember what the last two things relate to off the top of my head…)

The service number (8 digits) is something allocated to a group of services, e.g. all Norwich-Sheffield or similar services.

The UID is the (usually 6 character, ANNNNN) Schedule ID, in your example C21591. There is only ever a maximum of one of these departing on any calendar, day, hence RTT and others can uniquely refer to a service according to a URL of the format https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:<UID>/<yyyy-mm-dd>/detailed , e.g. https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:C21591/2026-07-10/detailed

The UID should not be confused with the Trust ID, a 10 character string which also uniquely refers to any service in a calendar month, but isn't so easy to work with:-)

Having said that, the service code for the 1R68 example is actually 22269000; the Trust ID is 481R68MF10.

Sorry, the "Schedule ID number" is something entirely internal to my systems and is of no use whatsoever.  What you need is the UID (C21591 in this case.) and the start date to tie it to the allocation.
