Does anyone have a shapefile copy of the UK rail line data. I need it for a project that i'm doing and i can only find WMS data, which does not allow or any editing. If you do that would be amazing.

I've got a copy of the DoT Inspire rail network on map.lu

https://map.lu/geoserver/ then Layer preview, on page 1 there's the department_of_transport_railnetworkLine layer. In the dropdown at the bottom are the WFS options with Shapefile in there.

If you want to use WFS directly:

Not everything is in that layer, but it seems to have most NR lines (i.e. not HS1) & there's a few errors when you zoom in. The dataset dates from about 6 weeks ago when I pulled it from the Inspire geoserver.

Whilst I was stuck on a delayed train this morning I had chance to play to see if I could extract the rail layout from the Open Street Map data and this is a far better dataset than the other one.

The new layer osm:osm_railway contains every track (not just a single line down the middle), platforms, disused & underground lines - effectively anything which has a non-null entry in the railway column of the planet_osm_roads table.
