Hello and firstly thank you to all who help keep the rail data wiki and this group running it's been a great help on my project so far.

I'm attempting to track train locations so what I have is a stomp connection to the Darwin feed subscribed to the all signal area feed.

Iv got berth movements mapping to smart then to tiploc's but im not seeing any td movements on my local line Stamford oakham melton. Any reason I can't find any movements in this area?

It also seems smart doesnt have any obvious entries for this area either. Am I missing something or is smart a work in progress?

Thanks
Chris

You won't find any TD berth messages for that part of the country, as there aren't any TDs there connected to SMART.  That's why the berth steps dataset doesn't have a berth operation in it for those locations - it's all manual TRUST reporting (and GPS where TRUST reports aren't mandatory).

Ah rite thank you. Is there a list of areas like this? Is there anyway of getting those manual reports to track the train?

Absolutely - you'll want the TRUST (Train Movement) feed, which will report the movement of the train at the STANOX associated with the timing point(s) in the train's schedule.  You may or may not get GPS-sourced reports at all locations however, it very much depends if the train is fitted with GPS equipment, its allocation is correct in GEMINI and if the backhaul from the train to the GPS Gateway is working.

Kinda wish I hadn’t started down this rabbit hole but now I’m interested I can’t stop 😝

It does seem that in manual reporting areas like mine the delay can be quite significant. Iv been looking at the Darwin feed as an alternative. Would that report movement any sooner or is it all based on that manual trust entry being made anyway?

Also can you tell me if there is any difference between the ‘old’ Darwin feed and the RDM one beyond json v xml?

Do they both exclude freight movements?

Thanks
Chris

From memory it is technically possible that Darwin would report sooner but I would expect in non-TD areas that if it’s not GPS based then it’ll be manual report. So probably no sooner.

Darwin excludes freight anyway.
