Hi,

I've been working with the data feeds for around a week, and I'm pretty inexperienced with rail data in general. I have an issue concerning the below service (York to Burley Park):

The timetable data contains the following:

  <Journey rid="202209278738567" uid="W38567" trainId="2C53" ssd="2022-09-27" toc="NT">
    <OR tpl="YORK" act="TB" plat="8" ptd="16:12" wtd="16:12" />

    <IP tpl="HEDNGLY" act="T " plat="1" pta="17:12" ptd="17:12" wta="17:11:30" wtd="17:12" />
    <IP tpl="BRLEYPK" act="T " plat="1" pta="17:14" ptd="17:14" wta="17:13:30" wtd="17:14:30" />
    <PP tpl="ARMLJCN" wtp="17:18:30" />
    <PP tpl="LEEDSWJ" wtp="17:20" />
    <DT tpl="LEEDS" act="TF" plat="4B" pta="17:22" wta="17:21:30" />
  </Journey>

Which my application is incorrectly showing as York to Leeds, rather than York to Burley Park.

There doesn't seem to be anything in the timetable that shows that this service actually terminates at Burley Park rather than Leeds. Is there any other data that needs to be cross referenced?

Any advise would be appreciated

Hi Mike

You're looking at the schedule for the train - what is planned and what it'll actually do.  It's a York to Leeds service, but it's advertised at York to Burley Park because there are faster York - Leeds services.  This is called a 'false destination' and applies to trains at specific locations - look at Poppleton and it'll be advertised as a Leeds train.

False destinations are added by customer information systems (CIS), and you'll see them in a <uR> message with the false destination for that location in an 'fd' tag.  Check out the message with ts="2022-09-27T03:13:43.3310703+01:00".

Mike,

The train runs from York to Leeds, although it takes a long while to do it. Showing it as only running to Burley Park (like this) is a traveller facing kludge used so that passengers at York don’t board it hoping to get to Leeds quickly.

There are several such customer facing kludges about, also including for circular trains (e.g. Cannon Street circulars via Slade Green) although their usage varies by location and fare inter availability.

AFAIK there is no static data describing these, they are done by location.

The other thing to note is that these well intentioned aids to the less informed traveller often make the better informed travellers life harder: they certainly can remove choice.
