Is there a reason why are you telneting to port 4242, port 23 is the
standard telnet port. Unless you did a custom xinet.d config for
telnetd on the server.
I've checked Brians guide and he doesn't set it up as anything
unusual.
Try just
telnet localhost
This said, if you just had the wrong port you wouldn't be getting a
login or the banner.
So lets presume your telnetting ok for a second.
Was "qm -start" defiantly run as root or sudo? I note the guide
doesn't advise that, although qm should scream if it is not.
As a side note, there is a .deb package for 2.6.6 on the open source
website. (
http://www.scarletdme.org/wiki/Downloads). It would have
done all the work for you :) It may crunch with the existing install
you have done by hand, I'm not sure. So you may get problems if you
try and use it now unless you undo most of the things you've done by
hand.
If you want more help I suggest you give a time when you can be on the
IRC channel and I can walk you through various diagnostics to get you
running. (irc://
