Assumung you backup your computer anyway ;-) I guess its quite safe to install it over the existing installation.OpenPNP 2 will leave your HOMEDIR/.openpnp directory untouched so if you want to return later, all your settings are still there.
Instead OpenPNP creates a new .openpnp2 directory, with a fresh machine.xml etc.
Mark wrote a rudimentary guide for porting your machine.xml over from the .openpnp directory here (be sure to make a copy!):
