You might want to look at the MKS 57D for the larger Nema 23. I've switched out almost every stepper in multiple machines for the FOC Servo42D or MKS 57D. They give fantastic performance. I haven't tried the RS485 or CAN options. As I recall these systems have a way to register a zero position on startup but I've never done the homework to use that feature. In the calibration procedure you use the controllers tiny display to record the magnetic field of the motor sensors. This will uniquely define the motor rotors position wherever you might wish to define zero. The motors are controlled using the classical en, dir, step. All the magic happens at the FOC controller mounted to the back of the motor. The mechanical home switches are unrelated to the motors operation.
